I have been weaning my DS for 8 weeks and have for the past two weeks been offering meat puree however he is refusing it. I have tried chicken, fish and beef mince all mixed with vegetables but he won't take them.

Anyone any ideas what I can try?

Thanks

Babies that young shouldn't be eating meat at all. Wait until he's a bit older. Stick with fruits and vegetables as babies get all the protein they need from milk. Actually at 7 months ideally a baby would be eating meat daily, in order to get adequate levels of iron, zinc and other important micro-nutirents (once you introduce solids the nutrients in breastmilk are somewhat blocked by other foods and babies fed traditional early weaning foods like fruits and vegies without iron rich foods have been shown to be increased risk of low iron levels even compared with EBF babies. The WHO recommends that meat or iron supplements be given daily from when solids are introduced. Studies have shown that babies given meat daily from as early as 4 months (when solids were introduced) show better iron levels and improved development at 12 months compared to those given iron fortified rice instead. Meat is now a recommended first food. My son loved anything puréed and lamb was one of his first foods (at around the 7 month mark), my daughter is adamant about self feeding (little madam) and will not eat puréed meat but will gnaw on a strip of steak or eat little peices of chicken thigh, she is 9 months now but was doing the same at 7 months. Maybe try different textures as its not necessarily the taste your baby is rejecting. Also try mixing fruit into meat purées, its been found that pairing a new flavour with something they already like (like sweet foods( makes them more likely to eat it alone further down the track, also the vitamin c in the fruit helps with iron absorption. Meat can also be puréed and spread onto finger foods or into sandwiches.

Have you tried just adding meat/chicken gravy (your own homemade is best) to mashed potatoes and veg or even rice and veg? That's what I did which worked well. :) I was about to mention this. My nephew never liked meat, but he loved the rice cooked in stock/gravy.. Or mashed potatoes softened with gravy..

Babies get heaps of iron from milk ... go back to fruits and vegetables and try again in a few months, as below: "Once your baby's willingly eating cereal and strained fruits and vegetables, you can add meat to his repertoire. For most babies, this happens around 7 to 10 months. It doesn't matter if you introduce beef or poultry first. If your baby rejects meat at first, wait a few weeks (or even a month or longer) and then try again. Many parents find that they have better luck if they start at around 9 months, when babies should be drinking less breast milk or formula and getting more calories from whole foods. At this point, babies become less satisfied with the standard menu of cereal, fruits, and vegetables, says Marilyn Tanner, a registered dietitian at St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. Meat is both dense and chock-full of protein, so it tends to be more filling than other foods. You may find that your baby takes longer to accept meat than other foods. That's because, in addition to a new taste, meat has a new texture."
