Anyone out there who had low response to IVF stimulation?

We've just tried IVF for the second time (the first one was successful two years ago and we had LO). The first time I didn't respond very well to the stimulation but we managed to get two embryos transferred.
This time the result was worse and ended up with no embryos to be transferred. The doc says that since I have low ovarian reserve even if I tried again I would probably get the same result (very few eggs). I'm 36 now.

Have any of you been in similar situation? Would you still try again if you had the money? The doctor went for the same protocol as two years ago and I'm wondering if I should try someone else? We did the IVF abroad since there aren't too many options here in Dubai and our first cycle was successful with that same doctor.

I'm a little depressed now and not sure what I want to do. Should I get rid of all the baby stuff or should I try again... This all happened less than a week ago so I'm still quite emotional about it (maybe the sudden drop of hormones is partly to blame).

Wow, thank you guys! It's nice to see all the good stories. I might try once again. At the moment I started taking some herbal supplements and will try acupuncture. And then will see how things go. Yes, don't give up. My friend was 36 or maybe 37 at the time too. I've also heard dr. fakih specializes in people with few eggs.

hi MDM THE FACT of producing a low nb of eggs at the age of 36 yrs old might be due to 2 reasons: 1- u might be needing a different protocol coz some drugs nd protocoles are tuffs for z ovaries. 2- u might be having a syndrome called : premature ovarian failure which means high FSH nd low Anti Mullerian Hormone on CD2. i Recommand u to make sure that ur doc gave u z right diagnosis. I advice u to go for a consultation with Dr Fakih in Jumeirah coz he knows how to deal with those stuffs coz a friend of mine went to him having almost z same problem nd he did for her a NATURAL IVF CYCLE....HE monitored her cycle nd than he collected z dominant follicule without giving her any drugs for nt 2 affect z quality of egg. Acupuncture s gd too coz it increases z flow of blood for z ovaries. Keep going Forward gd luck

I have a good friend in the UK. She did IVF but they were only able to retrieve two eggs. She was really upset, but the two eggs both fertilized and a few months ago, she had twins!

hi MDM Mom, Don't give up. I had my son 2nd time around. The first time, I responded well had (10 eggs of good quality) from that we got 7 embryo's, (BFN). Second time Dr Fakih changed the stimulation drugs, and I had low response only like 5 eggs, with only 3 embryos. The doctors said new drugs produced less eggs, but it was better quality eggs. Anyway it seemed to work as I know have a little boy. One of my cycle buddies she responds very well, she had like 20 eggs. She got pregnant but lost the baby at 5 months. She tired with her frozen embryo's at the thawing process only 1 made it, so they transferred that ONE. Last night she gave birth to baby girl. What I m trying to say is, some times it is not the quantity. All you need is ONE good embryo, good doctor and lots of luck. Both of us went to Dr Fakih in Jumeriah Beach Rd, he has clinics here in Dubai and also Abu Dhabi. He has very high success rate. I am going to him again when my little one gets little older. I know it is very expensive, but I thinks it is worth it. All the best.

Hi MDM, Yes, I've experienced the same as you. I finally have a little one after doing IVF twice. I went to Dr. Fakih on Jumeirah Road and I would go back to him in heartbeat. Answer to your question, if money wasn't an option then YES absolutely I would go back to Dr. Fakih and try again for another. Hope tis helps.

Thanks Kermi. No, my doc did not change the protocol, we just did the injections a little longer. Thanks for the tip about acupuncture. I read about Dr Ou here before but I totally forgot about it.

As far as I am aware, there are different protocols how to stimulate the follicle growth. Did your doc change the protocol once he monitored that you don't response? I'd contact the Dubai Gynaecology and Fertility Center (DGFC) in Health Care City to get a second opinion. If you make a search on here, you will find some more infos/reviews. Good luck! Added: Some women I know used acupuncture during their IVF cycle and responded much better to the stimulation. Maybe you can discuss this option with the clinic as well. (On this board, Dr. Ou comes highly recommended.) edited by Kermi on 08/01/2011
