Paying home help for additional hours

Hi Ladies,

I was just wondering how I should pay my live-in for mid-week babysitting, what do most people do ?

We don't go out that much during the week but every now and then something comes up and we need her to babysit for us. I have heard some employers have 2 nights babysitting per week included in the salary and pay additional over and above 2 nights, others only pay additional if the home help has to work on what should be her day off. Unfortunately I didn't agree any terms with her about working additional hours and I want to be clear about it with her so she knows what to expect and there are no misunderstandings.

Is 100 Dirhams average for an evening babysitting or is it too little ?

We pay her 2000 per month + food +phone, 1 day off per week.

Second question, we will pay her an annual ticket home and 1 month holiday, does that mean she gets paid for the month she is on vacation plus an additional month holiday pay (i.e a 13th month).

She has only been with us 2 months and it is my first time employing in Dubai so I don't want to set any precedents that might back fire on me, by either make me look too generous or being very mean. If she continues to work out as well as it is going now, we will for sure be extra generous to her, but don't want to build any expectations.

Thank you

Yes 13 months salary a year. As you have not detailed what you expect your maid to do and if your a working mother or not : Assuming she cleans the Villa and possibily looks after the children during the day when needs be. It is not unreasonable to have her baby sit one or two nights a week for the salary you have quoted . If you always ask her to baby sit at the weekend on a Thursday and Friday night rather than during the week on a regular basis , it would not give her much time off to relax and see her friends so maybe then additional payment would be deemed fair, but not so if it is occasional . But if your situation altered and you were going out 5 times a week, it would be reasonable to give her some additional payment as otherwise the woman never gets a rest. There are many different types of families here, in some cases both parents work and some parents go out alot others don't. Anyone expecting a maid to work from dawn to dusk and babysit 5 times a week deserves a better salary, hence one finds variations in salaries and conditions. Ladies can get very upset over these subjects but one needs to compare like with like for the salary offered . Mum2girls , You sound very reasonable and fair. She is lucky to have a boss like you. Raising expections too high can be dangerous as you noted. Good Luck

Personally, and this may not be a popular view, I think that you are paying her very generously already and I wouldn't be giving her any extra for an occasional evening babysit. I agree.

I pay my maid Dhs2300 (Dhs1900 salary and Dhs400 for food). [color=#3300CC'>Working hours are from 07:00 - 18:00 Sunday to Thursday, with two 15 minute breaks and one 1 hour lunch break. Fridays off day. Saturday 07:00 - 12:00, with one 15 minute break. Any other time worked is either overtime or babysitting. The first two babysitting for the month are deemed to be included within salary. Babysitting is paid at Dhs25 per hour and Overtime is at Dhs20 per hour.[/color'> The difference between Babysitting and Overtime: Babysitting = looking after the kids Overtime = cleaning/ironing/helping in the kitchen etc whilst I am at home looking after the kids I pay for 1 flight home a year and whilst she is on holiday she gets her one months pay, I don't give her an additional months pay as well. If she decides not to go home and works her holiday then she gets her one month's pay and her 30 days holiday paid out as well. ** The above bit in blue is written on her payslip every month so there is never any confusion.
