for whatever reason I had to withdraw my child from his current school (now...in jan) and was told that I could not withdraw unless the fee for term 3 was paid in full! is that normal??

My understanding is that most schools require a terms notice. So, if you formally gave notice by the first day of this term, about 3rd or 4th Jan then you will not have to pay for term 3. However, there are a few schools who require more than a terms notice so you would have to check the policy of the individual school.

It is interesting how many people send their children boarding schools and in most cases is expensive and successful and not always paid for by companies as people love to assume . The children get the best of both worlds if they have or retain their friends here. Yes we had our fees paid here and not for boarding, i think that says quite a bit about how strongly we felt, and yes it is FANBLOODYTASTIC, best thing we ever did as regards education.

Most schools generally want one term's notice if you are withdrawing your child. You could try speaking to them if you had mitigating reasons for withdrawing your child.
