Most dvd players can be made into multi region. Google multi region codes and then put in the make and model and you will be given a code. You enter the code via the remote control and that makes it multi region - that's presumably what the guy did in the back room for marycatherine.

I don't know what you need to check but I've bought a couple of dvd players in the last 2 years - I asked the salesman if it would play R1 DVDs - for one, it was already set up to play them. For the second, he took it to the back room and "did something" both work fine. One is LG the other is Panasonic.
