Hi,
My 5 week old DD has a small facial hemangioma that i have been told will get bigger and may last for a few years before it disappears.
Has anyone else been through this? and can recommend a specialist pediatrican.

Thanks

I have seen a lot of children whose faces looked completely normal and then their mothers told me they used to have enormous hemangioma's! So don't worry - it doesn't hurt, WILL disappear. Probably a good idea to see a paediatrician anyway to establish that it is indeed a hemangioma and not a port wine stain or other permanent birthmark. But you don't need a paed/dermatologist who is specialised in birthmarks at this stage.

Thankyou Spaniel for the advice. She did not have it when she was born and then it just appeared right between the eyes!!!!! if it grows bigger then it will be very close to her left eye , its just a shame that it has to be on her face and yes it is in the shape of a strawberry. at first we thought she had scratched herself. So its just a waiting game then :(

My child also has one. They are very common. What you have been told is correct. There is no way to tell how long it will take before the hemangioma disappears. Specialist advice is really only needed if the hemangioma is very near/in nose/mouth/eyes/ears region. Some doctors advise an MRI to check for any additional internal hemangioma's. The hemangioma can be treated with propanolol, a beta blocker, which has excellent results. But you can also just let it run its course (we are doing this as unsure about the long term effects of propanolol). Laser and steroids are also options I believe. Prepare yourself for a lot of questions on the street ("did you drop him?!" "did you eat strawberries during your pregnancy" "oh no what happened" etc)!
