where to fix a dress, or trim it?

I got a dress couple of days ago which is a bit too long and a bit too loose. Is there anywhere I could take it to, so they could tighten and do some alterations on it nicely without ruining the whole image of the outfit?(by trimming I meant alterations, made a mistake!!)
I'd really appreciate your help!
