If you are working with other nationalities do they speak to you like a child!!!!

I am working as a receptionist but making very good money at an American Company and I myself am an American. There is one lady that insist to speak to me like I am an idiot. I am not a rude person and just don't know what to do. It is really starting to rub me the wrong way.

Is she American herself? I worked at a legal firm in the States and one of the lawyers I worked for felt the need to read everything to me when it came to his revisions to documents. I got so tired of it I asked him if my personnel file had "Reading Disability" stamped on it. As suggested, ask her to speak slower and have her repeat things a couple of times. If she gets annoyed just tell her you wanted to make sure you heard her right the first time and you just needed clarification because you wanted to make sure you processed what she said correctly. And don't forget SMILE!!!!! No, she is Russian or something like that. And she is younger than me!!! I do smile but I really think that maybe I should just ask her if I look like and idiot!!! Just to prove a point!!! Point taken. hahahaha..... "Like"

Pull her aside and tell her that the manner in which she speaks to you , you feel is not appropriate and if there is a problem then can we please discuss it? Give her examples of her tone and the meaning of the tone when used in other examples. If the issue is not resolved then ask a supervisor to observe you trying to fix the problem and seek advice. Do not be defensive, do not be accusing be assertive meaning start all sentences with i observed, i overheard, i feel, not you did. Good luck!

I think I know what you mean. I work as a PA here and there are definitely some people, usually certain nationalities, who consider me "the help" and speak to me like I'm an idiot, or some kind of pauper. I think it's pretty ingrained in some people, so I'm not sure there is much you can do about it. I try to remain calm, look at the funny side of it and think about what we're going to spend our savings on! FFx

There is one lady that insist to speak to me like I am an idiot. Talk to her in the same manner that she is speaking to you. The same tone. The same speed. The same pronunciation. When she asks you why, which she will eventually, with an understanding look say that she shouldn't be embarrassed to have difficulty understanding clear English and to make it easier for her you have been copying the way she speaks to you.
