Surely a warning of an illegality is better than an "I told you so" after the event? It does happen, it happened to a family I know who copped the full lot for hiring a maid illegally when they reported her to the police for stealing from them. If you want to take that chance, knock yourselves out, but don't say you didn't know when it all comes tumbling down around your ears. (Not directed to the OP btw but to people who think it's ok to hire a maid without sponsoring her or let the maid they sponsor work elsewhere.) edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 10/03/2011

however I had an even harder time accepting the fact that I may have to be the one splitting up her family. [i'>[color=#990033'>You are not, it is not your fault[/color'>.[/i'> As for calling it illegal, there are quite a few other illegal things that most of us are guilty of, whether it's driving within six hours of having one drink, buying alcohol without a license, going over the speed limit, PDA, drinking water/eating in public during Ramadan or having certain medications in your medicine cabinet. Hi ladies, So I had a talk with the maid and I realized that she is open to having someone sponsor her. Part of the reason why her husband wanted to sponsor her was because he could as part of the recent lower salary requirement and he was afraid he'd lose out on his chance to sponsor her. It's harder for them to understand the consequences as they don't know anybody who's been fined during the ten years they've been here and may be under the impression that if they sponsor themselves, then they may be more employable. Although we are not willing to have helpers not sponsored by us, there seems to be quite a few others out there who are open to the idea. I realize that my post in a way is condoning this and have a hard time with it; however I had an even harder time accepting the fact that I may have to be the one splitting up her family. I'm really hoping to find her a family who is willing to accommodate her family- a bit of a stretch I know but they are very sweet, and she's been so wonderful to us, I'd really like to help her out. As for them doing anything criminal, we completely trust them whether it's leaving documents/money out, or our son in her care. As for calling it illegal, there are quite a few other illegal things that most of us are guilty of, whether it's driving within six hours of having one drink, buying alcohol without a license, going over the speed limit, PDA, drinking water/eating in public during Ramadan or having certain medications in your medicine cabinet. As for the fine, I thought it was 100K? as that was what I told my maid. I'm guessing 100K for not sponsoring and 50K for doing work for others? Can anyone clarify? In any case, I guess I've mislabeled the post. She said she wanted to work part time because she knows that she wouldn't be able to work after she picks up her son from daycare since she would have to watch after him. So part time in the sense that she knew the hours that she'd be working would be considered that, I'm guessing by local standards, she's already working part time with us (6-7 hrs/day). She had a similar arrangement with her previous employer who sponsored her- since they were an older couple and had a smaller house, they didn't need her the whole day, I'm hoping that there's someone out there who can offer the same. Thanks for your replies and concerns.

I realize it's a big risk for both her and the next employer, but she's the one who's willing to do this for the sake of not being away from her husband or having to send her son with her mom back home (neither of which either of them want). And I've heard of quite a few employers who are willing to take the same risk to save on the visa costs. Yasmine, not sure how big the risk is and how many people have actually been fined for letting their housemaid work elsewhere. If my current maid was willing to be sponsored by me, I would have been fine having a part timer come in and cover for my maid. Thanks for understanding ladies. Which part of IT IS ILLEGAL do you not understand? Which part of your opinion is not really cared for do YOU not understand? Who are u ladies? The EW police? Do u work for the CID? OP doesnt ask for this kind of reactions, she is a grown woman and well aware of what is legal or not. If the maid wants to do this, why do YOU care? I never got this bizarre mentality of butting into threads and leaving unwanted commentary, if you dont agree, start your own thread and nag about it... So I guess it's acceptable to break the law unless you get caught? So maybe i should also just walk into stores and start stealing and it would be fine because I woud not be caught. There are reasons as to why the law is there and why you are not allowed to employ a maid who is not under your sponsorship. I don't think the maid in question even knows whether it is legal or not. They are so misled and believe any bs friends and others feed into their minds. I don't really care whether she does it or not but I don't think that the OP should be advertising her illegal services on this board. She should try it somewhere else not on EW then.

Yasmine, your attitude is bad, and you are rude. If something is illegal, and the fines are over DH50,000 with the possibility of the maid going to jail, then yes, we are right for interferring. If you were asking us where you could find a joint, we would answer you the same. EW POlice? Lol, too funny....

GQ, she is able to do clean a 4 BR villa in 4 hours, so if you do know anyone who would consider this arrangement, please let me know. Thanks! So even after knowing the law you are going to pursue this line? Why are you putting yourself out for someone? the law is the law. Why do you care..so many people do this. OP wants advice, if you cant answer the question than why bother adding comments that clearly are not what OP is looking for. Anyway, to come to the point, we are actually planning to do the same thing. We only need a part-time maid and we will probably sponsor a maid so that she doesnt have to leave the country and only hire her for 3 days a week for a decent salary. I dont see what the problem would be? I used to be under my husbands visa and I worked for 4 years. Some companies only supply a labor card but not a visa. It is not illegal for housewives to work anymore. It has never been illegal for housewives to work, as long as they have an NOC from their husbands. BUT it is ILLEGAL for housewives to be housemaids. They have to be sponsored by their employer.

So even after knowing the law you are going to pursue this line? Why are you putting yourself out for someone? the law is the law. Maybe she is a caring human being who recognises the value of hardworkers and likes to help even if not from a comfortable zone (which might make her help even more valuable)? The law is the law but it is not always fair - whatever the place in the world is!

Thanks ladies, her husband works in a hotel and thinks that it will sponsor her and their child; if not, he was going to sponsor them because he's afraid that the laws will change in the future or that the minimum be raised, so he wants to sponsor them while he can. What perplexes me is how many maids out there are advertising that they have their own or are on their husband's visa, so there must be people who are willing to take them on, which is what my maid thinks as well. I would not want her or her next employer to get in trouble, but I'd also be gutted to separate the family and make her and their son go back to Sri Lanka. GQ, she is able to do clean a 4 BR villa in 4 hours, so if you do know anyone who would consider this arrangement, please let me know. Thanks!

Not doable She needs to be sponsored by employer as a domestic. This law is placed to ensure Immigration know who should be in what house.

GQ is right in that it's only legal for her to work for her visa sponsor. I also doubt you'll find someone willing to pay for all of the sponsorship costs and provide all of the other things legally required (flights home, health card, food etc etc) if she's only able to work part-time. I'm sure there would also be some legal issue with part-time sponsored work as each country has a minimum accepted monthly salary for her visa to be granted. With a 100K fine now in place for 'illegal' maids, it's not a risk many are willing to take any more. (not to mention that the lady would be jailed then deported if caught working illegaly) I hope you find a solution that works for her. edited by Green-ish on 08/03/2011

Abl where does her husband work, i.e. what area do they need to be in and what kind of visa will she be on? I thought it was illegal for a maid to work anywhere else besides at her sponsor's home. I have come across many maids who work a few hours in a home in exchange for accommodation, but I am afraid she may have a hard time finding someone who will provide accommodation and pay a salary for just a few hours of work a day. Then again, if she is doing the work of a full-time maid, you never know! I can pass the word on around here, but I live in the Green Community so am not sure if the location will work for them?

- What would be considered a fair salary for a part time maid working 4-5 hours when providing accommodation? We are trying to help our maid find a part time position since her situation has changed. When she joined us, she had several family members who lived nearby and could help her out with child support since she has a toddler. The family members are leaving Dubai for good now, and now she won't be able to help us out in the evenings. We hate to see her go, but ultimately we really need someone who's available in the evenings. I'd love to help her find a couple who's just looking for some part-time help from 8-12/1, but can provide accommodation for her, her adorable 2 year old son and husband (they've always been able to squeeze into the usual one-bedroom maids quarter). However I’m not sure what she can expect as far as salary goes, especially since she was on 2K working 6 hour days (she’s a very quick worker and is able to clean a 4 bedroom villa, cook and provide childcare during that time). We’ve sponsored her until early May, but her husband is planning to transfer the sponsorship of the whole family to his new employer so she would not need to be sponsored. If anyone is interested, please let me know; also if you have any advice or suggestions on how I can make this happen, please let me know as I wouldn’t want to separate the family and send her and her son back home after she’s been in Dubai for over ten years and loves the city.
