I have also had both - closed and open MRI's. The open one involved the contrast dye and was fine (except they couldn't find a vein so had to wander though the clinic in my gown and undies to the ultrasound machine so they could find a vein!) and it also made me have a warm flush. They warned me but I also just felt like I had wet myself and was pleased to discover I hadn't - not a nice feeling but overall a painless procedure that your daughter should be ok with. The closed MRI - full body - freaked me out. Never considered myself claustraphobic (sp?) before this but surprised myself by how much I freaked out. I panicked being enclosed, started hyperventilating and had to push the button to be pulled out and took a lot of calming down to be able to be pushed back into the machine. Felt like I was in a coffin. Since then I now feel very uncomfortable in enclosed spaces. It messed with my head more than anything, that I felt so disapointed with myself that I got so stressed while having it. Sometimes if it is for children they can administer a light sedative to assist the process. Good luck to your daughter.

Thats so strange I had the contrast dye ( 3 types ) and it made me warm lol but it doesn t hurt you need not worry for her I'm with you-made me feel warm too Maybe we re just warm people lol :)

Thanks all. I made the mistake of googling it and read the horror stories. Never a good idea!:\: Parsgirl the best thing is to speak to the doctor performing the tests and discuss any concerns you have about risks with him/her. With any medical procedure there is a risk of not having the procedure, but generally the risk is minimal and the need for the test outweighs the risk. They can perform skin test nowadays with most dyes to check for allergy if you have any concerns that your child is an allergic type of child. Realistically thousands of children and adults have diagnostic procedures every hour of every day, it's always harder to be the parent than the patient. You need to be informed and strong about any procedure your child has to keep your child from getting upset. all the best. <em>edited by Sticky Wicket on 08/03/2011</em>

I am allergic to the dye (contrast?) they use in CT scans, but was alright with the MRI contrast and had that at city hospital. They have an open MRI, which was a lot better.

Had tons of CT with contrast and 1 MRI without. Contrast made me feel like I'd wet myself (sorry!) but not painful or anything. Also had to drink gallons of this horrid liquid disguised as cheap orange squash! And the MRI was pain free but noisy! I really didnt expect it, it was like having a scan in the middle of a building site with all of the clunks and bangs! I'm ok usually with lifts etc but this was a tight squeeze (maybe that says more about me than the scanner!!) I just kept my eyes shut and tried not to think anout it. Mine was abdominale, suppose it could matter where on the body it is. No bother though, you'll be grand.

Same as a normal one but a bit longer, and mid-way through they insert a cannula into your arm and inject dye. I'm claustrophobic and I loathe needles and managed it, if that helps?
