Hi ladies,

Do you know where to but raclette cheese in Dubai? And what place do you recommend to buy a good raclette machine and fondue set (that can be used both for meat and cheese fondue)?

And a touch of lemon juice, non? Thing is, it feels so wrong in the Dubai desert, it only works at the top of a snowy mountain for me! And if you cranked up the A/C and scattered soap flakes all over the place? (Although judging from your other thread you need to find a cleaning service first ;))

Fondue : use 1/3 of Beaufort, 1/3 of Comte, 1/3 of Gruyere or Emmental ... or the Swiss way- "moitié-moitié" (half-and-half) Gruyère and Vacherin! (and a little cornstarch to thicken... maybe a shot of kirsch if you have a license... ) ;) And a touch of lemon juice, non? There is a beautiful little Le creuset fondue set in Bloomingdales on the lower ground floor.

I do, we buy the half cheeses at wait rose usually, I'm pretty sure carrefour has them too, but only the French kind, not the good Swiss stuff ;-)

Has anyone got one of those raclette machines where you put half a wheel of cheese over the heat and scrape the melted cheese off onto your plate? Could you buy half a wheel of raclette here, anyway?!

LOVE raclette and fondue. Have been looking for a long time for the grill here in Dubai, only found one at Tavola in Jumeirah, and it was too big. I got one the last time we were home in Europe. If I still needed one, and wasn't about to travel, I would buy it online, then I would have more to choose from. The raclette cheese I buy in Lulu Barsha or Carrefour.

Ladies, I'm from the French Alps so raclette and fondue , I was born with ! 2 very different dishes Fondue : use 1/3 of Beaufort, 1/3 of Comte, 1/3 of Gruyere or Emmental rub the pan with garlic. Add white wine (dry preferably) 1/2 way up. Heat up the wine to nearly boiling and add slowly the shredded cheese whilst turning with a wooden spoon. Keep adding everytime the cheese is melted. Then put on the burner and enjoy. Best is to get the baguette bread the day before, it wont hold on the stick if it's too fresh. Raclette : buy Raclette (Carrefour always has it), ham, prosciutto and patatoes cut the raclette (or have it cut) the size of the little raclette dish. Boil the patatoes. Put a piece of raclette cheese in the little dish and grill until well melted and turning brown (well that's how i like it!), pour over a piece of patatoe. LOVE IT !

Carrefour / Geant sometimes have Raclette machines though they seem to sell in no time! @ jwal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raclette so indulging, so delicious! edited by Quizzme on 14/03/2011 edited by Quizzme on 14/03/2011

Had my first raclette experience on Saturday night ... wow it was amazing. Cant decide if to buy one here in the UK and ship over and leave it till we arrive in Dubai then get one ... any thoughts ladies ?? Please describe the raclette experience, am really into my cheeses but never tried it! Is it like camembert, what accompanies it? edited by jwal on 14/03/2011

It was a lot cheaper than buying here.

I'm not sure how easy it is to find Bodum products in Dubai but they have a pan that works for meat and cheese fondues. This is what we use and it works great. As for the cheese I've seen raclette cheese in Carrefour and Choitrams.

Tavola in MoE should be your best bet. Bought my Raclette/Barbie Rechaud there. Quite expensive but worth every AED....if they don't have it, ask...they will happily order it ! Bon appetit..oder En Guete :-)

You can usually find French raclette cheese at Waitrose, and often at Carrefour as well, but like all things in Dubai you never know when it will be available. They sell Alessi metal fondue sets at Tavola, but they are quite expensive and the metal ones are really for meat, for cheese you ought to have the pottery pans, though I suppose you could always buy one fondue set and then just have an extra pan. I haven't seen a cheese fondue set or a raclette machine anywhere but I haven't been looking either, you might try Carrefour or Géant, they sell most everything :-)
