Considering a holiday with just me and the kids in summer (aged 5 and 1) and wondering where to go. DH will come for 2 weeks. Need to get out of here in August but don't want to go to the UK. Could do with it being a cheapie though which narrows down option. Thanks

Ramadan is not religiously observed in Turkey, especially Western Turkey. It'll hardly be noticeable especially in the beachfront towns and resorts. July in Salalah( Oman ) is said to be great too .... just another option ... might be cheap too All of August will be Ramadan though so it might be a bit too quiet and dull in Salalah then. Oh gosh, I hadn't thought of that! Turkey was quite high on our list!

Ansie - not sure if it will be warm enough to do safari with beach and pool, its on our list of 'to dos' though! Speena will have a look at club med, had seen a Hilton in Turkey that looked good in Dalaman, not looked a club med before, so will check it out. Thanks.

Europe is expensive in August, Asia has monsoon, how about Africa? Kenya is only 5 hours flight from here and they have great beaches. Or South Africa. Although it's winter then the Bushveld and game reserves has very mild weather. And I'm sure the kids will love it.

Unfortunately in the Northern Hemisphere August and cheap do not go hand in hand when you are looking for getaways!

Bump. Looking for August holiday ideas too! Preferably hotel rather than villa as four kids from 1 - 8 and will need the variety of pools/clubs to keep them all occupied!

Lots of options. Thanks for those. We had considered Greece but wasn't too sure about getting around with the luggage and kids on my own as it'd mean a ferry or flight after that. Thailand is always a realiable option. Been there a few times but always happy to go back. Greenish - what's the best way to get to Croatia from DXB? Also, anyone been to Goa in the summer. Thought it was monsoon season and best avoided? Thanks We went to Goa a couple of years back at the end of July.... Had a great time. Was monsoon season and the beach was closed but only had 20 mins of rain on 4 days out of the 10 so it wasn't a problem...Infact it was fab after being here!!... Yep, we were the crazy Brits standing in it with our arms outstretched! *LIKE* :D Sometimes the best holidays are had if yoou head there when everyone else is avoiding the place. ;) Yep.. You're right Green-ish! The pool was still up and running and it was lovely to swim with the warm rain beating down! Did get a few funny looks..But...Well, thats not nothing I'm not used to!! Hope life is treating you well over/under there?! x

Oops...sorry jasmine. I actually haven't been to any of those countries. I just always suggest Italy or Turkey, both of which would be hot and expensive (very!) in August. Goa, Croatia and Germany were on the list of places we never got a chance to visit. My in-laws went to Croatia and said it was amazing! A school-Mum friend told me all about renting a house by a lake in Germany and spending the days walking in the woods with the children...bliss. I'm sure lots of the ladies here can help you if one of those appeals.

In August? Hot, humid, expensive and many places closed? I love Italy though :)

Greece! Pick a Greek island and book an apartment or villa for the month. Only 4 hours flight away and you can fly Air Arabia to Athens for a next to nothing and take an internal flight/ferry to your island of choice. Greece is also more affordable than Western Europe and the love kids. I twice booked this place whilst on a very tight budget: http://www.chiossunrooms.gr/chios_sunrooms_en.htm and http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g189476-d577848-Reviews-Chios_Sun_Rooms-Chios_Northeast_Aegean_Islands.html Edit to add that best is to go away over July as August in Europe becomes silly expensive and there are also too many closed shops and restaurants due to the Europeans themselves being on holiday. Alternatively Thailand. This place is super affordable http://www.phuketsansukobungalow.com/ and http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g1215781-d1480398-Reviews-Sansuko_Ville_Bungalows-Phuket_Town_Phuket.html <em>edited by Singapore Sling on 16/03/2011</em>

My friend went to Bulgaria 2 years back and was very impressed...She stay at Constantine and Elena (don't know if hotel or sea resort) and she paid 400 euros a week for the stay including the food (she shared the room with 2 friends) .... <em>edited by Mariana on 16/03/2011</em>
