Last time we went to London, we went to Metro retro and my 17 year old loved it. Are there any stores like Value Village or salvation army that sell used clothing relatively cheaply in London? She likes to buy used clothes and then reconstruct/embellish them. Many thanks.

Thanks for the tip about Primark. We just heard about that store a few days ago and when I googled it, I was amazed to see how many locations there are!! It might not be the one for my daughter, but I am sure I can drag my son in there to find jeans for his skinny little waist!!! My daughter is quite delighted at the thought of going through the bins, she likes hunting for things, so we are all set! Thanks everyone for your help!

High Street means Main Street.............nothing to do with class of stores. Although, these days in the UK only chain stores and tax exempt charity shops can afford a presence on the High Street.

Also there is the huge chain called Primark ( new stuff, not used). It is so cheap in there, around 10aed for flip flops, t shirts, vest tops. dresses from 25 aed. Its like a Forever 21 type store but alot cheaper! Camden market is cool with lots of vintage little shops and market stalls all in one area, very hippy/ alternative stuff. You could probably get things like pin badges and sew on badges of bands/ peace signs etc. to make clothes really cool and different.

I am on it! Thanks for your replies! I will be asking around for "charity shops" on whatever streets I can find!! I really appreciate all your replies. We are off to find some clothes to be-dazzle, be-jewel and re-design. Life is good!

Just stick to calling them charity shops. Almost anywhere you go in the UK there will be a strip of charity shops and anyone will know where to direct you. Just say, "where are all the charity shops around here" and they will know. If you google charity shops, you will get a ton, like oxfam, uk cancer research. I would also suggest portobello market maybe? http://www.portobellomarket.org/secondhandgoods.htm Mind you, at the charity shops they will be more like a salvation army or goodwill, as in, they won't be very hip and your teen will have to sift through it all. I have heard that now days, charity shops are wise to the game and they employ staff that go through the donations and they send the "good stuff' somewhere else or sell online. Goodwill is like that now in the states and has quite an online shopping stash. I think "high street" these days (to most people) simply refers to the main street in the town where all the shops, pharmacies, etc., are. Kind of like how we might have said 'main street' in the states.

High streets are where the high end and pricier fashion shops are located. I believe its the other way round - for example Next, H&M, Debenhams, New Look, are classed as "high street" shops.

Thanks, but I don't know what the expression "high streets" means. (Kind of embarrassing to admit:))We are staying near the London eye, so I will snoop around there and see what we can find.

Most high streets in the UK have a couple of charity shops, I know of one off Kensington High Street opposite the entrance to Waitrose (top end of Earls Court Road), as this is an expensive area they do sometimes have some bargains!
