My gardener is quoting me 650 dirhams for planting little bits of grass in our very small garden (30 square meters). It seems expensive since it's bits of grass. Am I wrong ?

Eitherwise has anyone planted grass seeds here before. Does it work ?

thanks

yeah, i think he quoted you way too much! go for the grass seeds. it worked like a magic in my garden. for just AED70 per box!!!! and it is sprouting non stop! i get it frm Dubai Garden Centre. the current grass turf laid by my garderner ,he actually messed up himself. he kept saying in 2 weeks the new grass will grow.. alas, i went and sort it out myself. and it is lovely now like a soft carpet grass! edited by tipahtertipu on 29/03/2011 may I ask how long did it take for the grass seeds to sprout?

Thanks Green-ish. I think the fertilizer thing is the issue. The old guy used to knock the door and ask if it was ok to put it on the lawn (as he knew I had young kids), but this guy (same company, diff man) doesn't seem to know one end of a garden from another. He's never told me he was putting anything on the grass. My green fingers are almost non existent, granted, but it looks as though my garden is dying before my eyes and I don't fancy the cost of replacing!

Can I jump on this thread and ask a grass question? We've got grass (laid as turf) that is starting to look a bit worse for wear - I'm sure the gardener hasn't looked after it very well, as it used to be nice, but we've had a change of garden man and it's starting to look shoddy now. Do you think I could throw some grass seed down (on top of the grass that we already have) and see what happens? Or do you think a bit of lawn feed or the such may make it look nice again. It's not from lack of water - our irrigation always seems to be on (normally just when I want to take the kids out to play!) I've tried having a conversation with the garden company, but their english and mine don't seem to correspond. You have to keep the fertiliser up to it as there's unlikely to be much, if any, in the soil/sand. Best to ask at the plant souk at Warsan or Garden Centre on SZR for what to use, how much of it and how often. And yes, if you have patchy bits you can over-sow, but you'd want to be sure and use the same type of grass.
