Does anyone know of any schools in the UAE using ebooks for learning and are they using laptops, ipads etc. Very curious as to how this is going to pan out in the future over here as it seems it is the craze in the USA now.

Studies show you retain less information if you read something electronically than if you read it on paper. Just saying. Interesting Guinness do you have any links? http://www.mendeley.com/research/reading-from-paper-versus-reading-from-screen/ and http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/~adillon/Journals/Reading.htm

The schools that I know off are using it from Grade 10 and have bought either laptops or Ipads for the kids - not sure if these go home or not - I would expect so - and also if parents have to put a deposit on them. I am wanting to know as I work for a publishing company so I need to do some research on which schools use ebooks. I personally think it will be great shame on the written material, but I also know that this style of teaching is going to come, whether we like it or not. The one plus that I can see is that children will not get bad backs in later life from carrying heavy book bags everywhere! Interesting to hear grades can fall from using technology. A good point.

One of the many excuses dorter offers for not doing too well at school this year is that the majority of her work is done "electronically" - she hasn't written an essay by hand since she got here and even maths homework is done on the computer, and given in via email. Lazy teaching? The danger with maths online is anyone can do it, my oldest used to do several kids maths homework online when he was here, no one knew.

Should e books be encouraged within schools? What age range? Secondary? Who will pay for them? How will all children access them? Is this the answer to saving money and not having to provide and build libraries in schools? Lastly should we be following the lastest craze from America? edited by Sticky Wicket on 10/04/2011
