I am going for one tomorrow do you lay completely flat or is your head raised when lying down? I have been suffering from some back problems and I'm not sure I will be able to lie flat for a period of time!

Yes, do. I hated having an MRI scan when I smashed my S3, it was so pain full and not good if you hate small spaces. The CT scan was MUCH better, much faster.

Sorry to put a damper on this, I had an MRI when I suffered from back pain in Geneva and honestly, the positions they put me in, I was crying out in pain - it was because I had to stay still for what felt like so long, in various different positions, they kind of tied me down to make sure I wouldn't move at all and it was awful. Agree with the suggestion that you take pain-killers beforehand and expect to suffer. At least they found nothing wrong with me at the end of it, but ooh, it was painful at the time, having to lie unmoving for ages. If I'd been able to read a book or listen to my ipod or watch telly, it would have been so much better, to have had distractions, but they don't seem to have that kind of thing in place, so all you do is concentrate on what an uncomfortable position you're in Not funny :)

You will be positioned on your back but they will do their best to make you comfortable. Ask for a pillow to be placed under your lower legs to help with lower back pain, and you will have a pillow for your head too. Just let them know how to help you get comfy. ETA it might be an idea to take some pain relievers half an hour or so before your scan is due if you do get pain lately. edited by maxindubai on 10/04/2011

You will, in all likelihood, be lying flat on your back but do tell the technicians of your concerns. I've had MRIs in the past and my issue is, the longer I lie there, the more I have an uncontrollable urge to twitch! The technicians may decide to use special weighted 'sandbags' to help you feel comfortable and/or put you into a comfortable position. Don't be scared, and don't be worried that you're going to 'muck it up'; it's their job to worry about how to get the best pic of your back and it should only take 20 mins or so. Good luck. :)

It middle upper back they will be looking at, not sure what you mean by contrast sorry! What will they do if I cannot lay flat? not a doctor so I can't be certain :-) but have had loads of scans, unless its an upright MRI which I don't think they have here you will lie flat on your stomach. Contrast is when they inject you with a dye so they can see more clearly

Laying flat though will be the position for most of them, are you having contrast?
