I may be doing a visa run for a friend at the weekend. Having checked with the hire company I lease my car from, they have informed me that the car is only insured for the UAE and I will have to get Oman insurance. Can I get this on the way to Hatta or do I have to sort it out in Dubai before I leave? Also does anyone know roughly how much it will cost?

I did many visa runs to Hatta and the only time they asked us to purchase insurance was when we wanted to drive on further for some sight seeing rather than just do a u-turn at the boarder.

Thanks. It was never my intention to not get insurance. Just needed to know if I had to organise it before I left and approximate cost. Thanks very much for the replies.

Its just not worth the risk, not having insurance because if any crazy person causes you to crash it WILL be your fault for not having insurance regardless of how the accident was caused. Imagine if you write off a hire car, you will be responsible for replacing it as well as the legal implications. Mind you when we bought insurance before crossing the border, it was totally written in arabic and could have been a shopping list for all we knew.:\:

I have to say Radley that we often do visa runs to Hatta and we have never once been asked for Insurance documents - it may be luck I know! Does anyone else know if you need Insurance cover if you are just turning straight around and coming back to Dubai??? yes they can ask for it, as you are driving into oman. as with all things here they dont necessarily ask for it, but they may.

You can get it at the petrol station just before the Oman border, it's a little white building just next to it and is also signposted. If I remember correctly it's around 60 dhs for 2/3 days (min coverage time).
