Breastfeeding and clexane...

Hi

I'm just wondering if anyone has taken Clexane and been able to breastfeed successfully? I'm currently on 60mg injections every 12 hours for DVT and will continue to inject for 6 weeks after the birth (I'm due in mid June). I am a bit worried of the risks involved as I do plan to breastfeed during this time. I've done some research via internet and same say it's fine and others say there is a risk. The dr's I have asked said it's not a problem, but I still don't know!! If there are others who have been in the same situation, I need your advice!!

I was suppose to fly back to NZ the beginning of April to give birth at home, but instead I spent a week in Al Wasl Hospital with extensive DVT! Not quite what I was expecting as now my DH and I have to plan the birth here which was very unexpected!! And on top of that, it was discovered that my baby has an irregular heartbeat! It's incrediable how a perfect, problem-free pregnancy can suddenly change and end up high-risk! But overall, I must say the care I received in Al Wasl was really good. Getting to know it really well now mind - the only part I don't think I've been to is the labour ward (but that will come soon enough!)

If anyone can give me any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I get it from Life Pharmacy. They normally have one or two boxes in stock (in the bigger ones like Al Wasl Rd and in Mirdif) and then they order in the rest (I've ordered 28 boxes last month and now again for this month, as I would rather get them in bulk so don't have to constantly be thinking about them!) They normally take a day or two to come in. And when I ordered them last night, they said that they had over a hundred of them available in their store room. So at the moment, they have a lot. Hope this helps.

I finally saw a dr yesterday who knew what they were talking about and who took the time to listen! I was already feeling a bit more relaxed after your posts - so after all my worrying, it should be safe to breastfeed. I was just a bit worried as the dose of Clexane is quite high and having to take it every 12 hours (especially for the 6 weeks after the birth)... On another positive note, baby's heartbeat has corrected itself! Thanks again

Hi Suz http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT has reliable info - search for enoxaparin (I believe this is the active ingredient in clexane but please double check). I also have some information at home which I can look up for you if you like - if so, please just drop me a line on khoury at null dot net . Best wishes Sian edited by BFC on 04/05/2011

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you have to go through. Hopefully all will be alright with LO. Al Wasl hospital is really great and you can be assured that you get the best medical support possible. (I went to emergency when DD was 5 months and was really pleased by their professionalism) Also Al Wasl is very pro breastfeeding from what I heard. I know a great website where you can look up all medicines and see if they are safe during pregnancy and bf. It's in German though. On there it says that Clexane should not cause any problems bf and definitely does no harm to your baby. So, don't worry about that just yet. Bf in the beginning is not easy as it is, so don't add to the stress before you're even there. Good luck with everything!
