Hi Ladies!

My 6 mo DD has started wanting to go to bed earlier and earlier. She is a FAB night time sleeper (and i do realise how lucky we are believe me!) and sleeps for 12 or 13 hrs straight through. From 3 months, we made 7pm bed time and she as had no problem with this. I went back to work at 5 months, and she started at nursery.

Now my problem is, she seems to be dropping her afternoon cat nap, and pushing bedtime further and further up. She is asleep already now, and its only 6pm! she has never been a great daytime napper. I usually just read her cues and when the eye-rubbing starts, pick her up and let her doze off in my arms, (heinous, i know) or pop her in her bouncer or car seat and she goes off, but only ever for 30-45 mins at a time. Out current routine is this:

Wake up at 6.45am, solid feed for breakfast plus bottle. She sometimes cat naps on the way to nursery in the car, sometimes not, but has one 30-45 min nap at nursery at 9.30am ish, feeds at 10am, then another 30-45 min nap at 12ish, feeds at 1. I Pick her up at 3.30, she usually naps in the car on the way home, and once home i take her out in her car seat and leave her in there till she wakes up) We get home, have another solid feed, play, then around 5pm she starts the eye rubbing. Now a few times i have tried to put her down for a nap in the usual way, but she has woken up after 30-45 mins and gone completely bezerk until ive put her in her jammies and put her to bed. Like she was disgusted that was a nap and not actual bedtime. I guess my question is, do i persevere with the late nap, and try to push bedtime back to 7 or 7.30pm, even if it means her going nutso? Or do i leave it at 6-6.30 and spend the last hour of the day trying to distract her from how tired she really is?

Well ladies! Did some reading around the book you all mentioned and took on board all the fab advice given last night. This morning i watched her like a hawk for first signs of tiredness (pre eye-rubbing!) did a quick nap time routine, basically a much less involved bedtime routine, and popped her in her cot and left her. After a whopping TWELVE minutes of grumping-it-out (you couldn't even call it crying) she dozed off and slept for TWO HOURS!! I honestly couldn't believe it! So, turns out DD is not a bad daytime napper at all, i just wasnt creating the right environment for her to sleep successfully. She only naps for 30 mins, so she may as well be down here i her chair. Well, no, she only naps for 30 mins BECAUSE shes down here in her chair! Hello woods/trees! Thanks for the advice ladies. Long may this continue!!

I'd just try and focus on the daytime naps a bit. Sleeping for only 30-45 minutes at a time might not be enough. Sleeping in the car or in a bouncy chair is not as relaxing as sleeping properly in her crib. Maybe she wakes up before she's done sleeping because she gets uncomfortable. That was the case with my DD at that age. She's only ever sleep in the Ergo carrier or in the car and never sleep more than 30 minutes at a time. Once I started putting her down at the right time (before the eye rubbing started) and put her in her own bed with her sleeping bag and a little bedtime ritual, she slept so much better. I second the book that a previous poster recommends on here. It worked like a miracle for DD. She's a phantastic sleeper (day & night) and so much happier during her awake time. She's now 18 months, has one 2.5 - 3 hour nap at noon and goes down at nights at 6:30 and sleep till 6:30 am or 7. edited by happymommy on 16/06/2011

Yeah, i love her 6pm bedtime, i just started getting nervous as she started looking more tired by 5.30pm and then 5pm, that it meant 5 am wake ups! 6am is fine but 5... Thanks both for sharing your hints. I think i will just let her tell me when bedtime is for a while and see how it goes, and I will try to start reading her better for naps too.

Early bedtime improved overall sleep for us without an earlier wakeup, try making it 5pm then gradually slipping it later if after a week she starts early waking. I love that my son has an early bedtime and I get more time to myself. :)

Try extending her current bedtime by 15mins for 3 nights then another 15mins for 3 nights so on and so forth till you reach 7pm. But agree with another poster, get her down before the eye rubbing and she may sleep for longer as then she wont be overtired when she goes down. Try to look for her cues before the eye rub such as pulling at ears, sneezing staring off into space.

Hmmm... i dont know why im assuming that 5.30pm bedtime is such a bad thing - I suppose because im assuming it means she will wake earlier and earlier in the am? Although from a quick look at the book you recommended, they say earlier bedtime cam mean a LATER waking time. I guess i will just keep following her lead, and if she wants to sleep, put her to sleep. I introduced a third solid feed today for the first time at lunch for the nursery to give her, and they said she napped much better today (just over an hour), so perhaps more food will help too.

Well my 10 month old is in bed now, and it is 5:45pm.(in Doha) He's a little tired today but his normal bedtime is 6pm and he has 3 hours worth of daytime naps (2 x 1.5 hour naps) so with your LO having less than that I'm not surprised she is knackered by 5pm. Read Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and you might just start putting her to bed an hour earlier, as Dr W would say "you can't fight circadian rhythms" ;) I think you might find she naps better if you put her down before the eye rubbing starts, worth a try. edited by kiwispiers on 16/06/2011
