Hi ladies,
I am new to posting but read the forum a lot. I am hoping you can give me some advice.
I am 5 weeks pregnant and went to my gynecologist (visited her once before for smear) based at the Welcare Clinic, for blood tests and confirmation of pregnancy etc. She says that I can stay with her, at the clinic, for the duration of my pregnancy and then go to the hospital for delivery or change over to a doctor that is based at a hospital. It is entirely up to me.
Can you please advise if there are any advantages/disadvantages to changing to a Doctor based at a hospital?
Can you please also advise what I should be looking for/at when I visit hospitals?

Personally I went the doctor at hospital route to begin with and in month 7 my doctor - Yuliya from city - left and moved to Cooper clinic. After much thought I decided to follow her coz it was late in the game and I was really comfortable with her. She delivered at medcare and all round a decent experience. But friends of mine who'd stayed with the hospital (direct doctors) did seem to have it easier. For example we had to speak to 2 sets of people at the time o delivery. There was paperwork to be sent to hospital and notes that we had to carry. We were unfamiliar with the staff in maternity etc. Not a big deal but extras that could be helpful not to worry about on an already 'big' day. Also most hospitals tend to be direct billing for insurance while a good number of clinics arent so that might be something to think about. Maybe find a couple of doctors you like and then decide. I saw 2 doctors before I found mine.

Hi TeaBreak, Welcome on EW and congratulations on your pregnancy. Not all gyns in Dubai have rights to deliver babies. Those who can, usually limit their services to certain number of hospitals. If you found ob-gyn you are comfortable with, it is worth to check where he / she delivers. It is comforting to have ob-gyn who support your choices and will be there for you especially at the time of delivery. HTH

Hi TB and welcome to the forum. I don't have kids, so I can't comment on that side, but I have been to hospitals here for treatment and surgery. The biggest difference or advantage, IMHO, would be that, say if you see a gyno at City Hospital (which is part of Welcare), and then you give birth at City Hospital, then that gyno is already there and knows you and your history. She would also be able to get to the hospital on call, or to you in the room while you're going into labour and delivering. It's the consistency and convenience of staying with the one doctor all the way to the delivery.
