planning to start a family. I am about 5-6 kgs over weight. no i am not obsessed. but its my glutton self who is enjoying food these days. My husband and I are planning a family soon. Would like to get pregnant. I was wondering what are your tips on how to take care of your self before trying and while pregnant as a migrant in Dubai. Health tips, hospital registration tips, looking at schools and i do not know what else. I’d welcome any tips. Thanks!

From what I understood from my doctor when we were trying, some people can find their fertility affected by weight and a reduction of only 10 per cent of your body weight can have a positive effect. If you think it might help, what harm can it do? Unless you're actually underweight in the first place, that is. I was a few kilos over my ideal weight for a good while and I did manage to conceive after I'd lost some, but there are so many variables I really couldn't say if it was the weight loss that was the deciding factor. For anyone looking at trying to conceive, I'd recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler and registering on www.fertilityfriend.com. Both are excellent resources and will teach you a huge amount about how your body works and how you can give yourselves the best chance of conception. When you are pregnant, you can either visit a doctor at a community-based clinic or a hospital. The community-based ones (well, most of them) will have delivery privileges at hospitals so you can see the same doctor throughout your pregnancy and then deliver with him or her. If you pick a busy ob/gyn, it might be an idea to pop along and have a couple of preliminary checks to a) make sure you're physically in good shape to conceive and b) get yourself on the patient list so you don't have to wait months for an appointment when you do fall pregnant. Schools and all that can wait till later :D.

Make sure your health insurance covers maternity, birth and any complications that may occur with either yourself or your new born. Start taking Folic Acid, Pregnacare is a very good vitamin supplement if you're trying for a baby. Don't stress about losing weight, just make sure your are eating healthily and doing moderate exercise. Your weight may slowly drop anyway. Cut out any vices such as fags and booze, if this applies to you. And enjoy ;-)

From the health point of view it is good to be at your ideal weight as it improves your fertility. More important though is to start on folic acid 400mcg daily (5mg if you are diabetic or have epilepsy). If you have any health problems check with your doctor for any specific advice. edited by jillp on 27/10/2011
