Need to top up when weaning of the breast?

Hi ladies,
I'm in the process of weaning DS off the breast and onto formula...started quite a while ago and dropped the 6.30pm feed first. After a few weeks I then dropped the 11am feed. About a week ago I then dropped the 11pm dreamfeed (he takes about 150-180ml now in bottle, naturally lessening as solids increase). So he is currently being breastfed at 7am and 2.30pm.
My question is, do I need to supplement at these feeds? I'm not sure if he's getting a full feed still as not sure how much milk I have left? The fact that he still takes sooo much at the dreamfeed after a big solid meal and 240ml bottle before bed makes me wonder...? Also, will eventually drop the 2.30pm feed but I'd like the keep the morning feed for a while longer...is this possible or will there not be enough?
Any advice?

no worries! well, only downside of tummy sleeping it appears is he seems to wet himself right up to his top, through his suit and onto the sheet...!! Happened twice in a row now so tonight he's gone to bed with 2 nappies...lets hope this works... :)

thanks for your support as always :) I know I'm doing the right thing for me but it's still hard to not feel a bit guilty...still though I'm glad we got to breastfeed until now as there were so many times in the first painful 7-8 weeks when I almost gave up! Well just got him down for a nap - it's a struggle these days as all he wants to do is flip onto his tummy and can't work out how to put his head down during the day...I was thinking of you training your DS! Yesterday I tried for AGES to get his little head down during a nap and as soon as I would step away, up it would pop! Last night though he slept from about 4am on his tummy - was prob too tired to fight it then :)

I don't think he'll be sad at all, its not until they are older they get any sort of emotional attachment to it. Yes def get yourself sorted, its more important at this point that he has a happy healthy mummy :)

yeah I've tried that as he definitely seems to have a preference for the right side...these days on the left he only takes a little bit and then starts blowing raspberries as if he's not impressed by the flow anymore LOL! It's hard...I do feel a bit sad to be weaning (he doesn't seem to be though...no loyalty to mum's milk!!) although I know I need to get my own body sorted...feels like he's growing way too quickly... :(

Wouldn't worry about the not feeling full part, thats normal by the 6 month mark anyway (if not earlier) as the fullness is when you are making too much milk. If you're not wanting to wean the 2:30 breastfeed for a while you can try and boost your supply for it by switching back to the first breast after he finishes the second etc, make sure you are not restricting the amount of time he is allowed on the breast etc, otherwise just give the formula, he will most likely start to feed for less time on the breast as he anticipates the bottle, but since you are weaning thats a good thing, as will make it easier on your body.

thanks for the reply kiwis...absolutely don't think solids should take the place of milk feeds...he still gets 5 full feeds in 24 hours! He's a hungry munchkin. :) Offered some top up today after his 2.30 feed (only 60ml as experiment) and that was gone instantly so perhaps I need to offer more...it's hard to tell how much he's getting from the breastfeeds now, I never really feel very full anymore... any other advice welcome :)

Am obviously not really the person to give advice on this except to say that you would still expect big milk feeds at his age, solids should NOT be taking the place of any milk feeds at all, your wee guy will miss out on important nutrition if they do so don't worry about the bottle feeds being big ones. I found that even with my guy taking 3 large meals (like 10 or more cubes a meal) he still drank just as much milk until he was more like 9/10 months, they are growing a lot and the "solids" mostly pass straight through them, especially the starchy ones, so the energy needs to come from somewhere (thats why you should always offer the milk before the solids at this age). So, no harm in offering a formula top up after the 2:30pm breastfeed, wouldn't offer one after the 7am at this point until you are ready to wean the 2:30. To ensure enough BM you could just offer him breast by demand if he seems hungry between the 2 breastfeeds. In theory you should be able to continue breastfeeding even with just the one feed per day, your breasts will adjust to the demand, so you should continue to make enough milk for that feed for as long as he consistently demands it. I actually found that DS stopped wanting to BF in the morning at around 8 months and had only solids until his naptime feed with a lot more BFing in the afternoon. Will be trickier to sustain only one scheduled BF if yours goes the same way but any breastmilk he takes is good, even if its not a full feed.
