Hi ladies,
Yet another nap thread! Just when you think you have things sorted with these bubs they decide to test you out again :)

My DS is almost 11months old and from around 7 months became a brilliant sleeper and napper....napping in the morning around 930am (wakes at 7) for anywhere from 45 min to an hour and a half, then napping again at 1/1.30 for 2 hours. I take him in to his dark bedroom, pop him in his suit and he goes off to sleep unassisted. However in the last week he has started sitting up and wailing when I leave the room...it started with the afternoon nap (morning was fine) but has now progressed to mornings as well. After I go back in and place him back down and pat him on the back he then goes off to sleep but I have to wait until he's really asleep before leaving otherwise he sits up and starts again (and this whole process is starting to take longer each time too). He's also woken once or twice in the night in the past week too and done the same thing, although last night slept through again no issues.

Is this seperation anxiety or could it be time to drop a nap? Developmentally he's crawling everywhere, cruising and starting to randomly stand up unassisted for a few seconds. I'm worried about giving him another sleep association by patting him to sleep (from a mum who had months of dummy issues and wakings every 45 min through the night!!) and yet I can't bear to hear him wail and see him on the video monitor sitting there with his arms out. Any advice is welcome!! Is it just a phase?

thanks kiwi....this morning I tried putting him down a little later, closer to 10 rather than 9.30 and he really fought it!! I was in the room and thought I'd stay there patting and he just kept fighting me and wanting to stand up....I knew he was tired so I just walked out for 5 mins and he then started getting hysterical so I went back in and lay him down and this time after about 10 mins he went to sleep and slept until almost 12. Normally he would have a nap at 1.30 for 2 hours but that's out the window now :) Will try and give him milk around 3ish and put him down for a shorter nap (normally has milk after nap). I am wondering about cutting one nap which is why I let him just sleep on this morning to see how long he'd sleep but I don't think he slept enough for the whole day....When your DS was napping from 10-1or2, did you put him to bed any earlier? Normally he sleeps from 7 to 7 beautifully....ahhhh! ah yes, waiting for the fussy eating phase...I'm just enjoying the fact that he eats well now! His personality is definitely starting to develop - he's got such a strong will!

we went through a similar phase re bedtime around the 12 month mark, lasted a few weeks fr me having to wait until he was asleep before I snuck out and then he was fine again, fingers crossed will be the same for you. Could maybe be time to drop to one nap? although I'd leave it until he is well and rested. Most people seem to drop the morning nap but for us it worked much better to drop the afternoon and he then started having a longer morning nap from around 10am until 1 or 2pm, night sleep immediately improved tremendously. Worth a try? oh and brace yourself for the 12 month old fussy eating phase, that should be just around the corner waiting for you. :)

thanks all....well we had a bit of a nightmare weekend regarding sleep as he has now also come down with a bit of a cold and runny nose so was waking up constantly. Fri night was up for 2 and a half hours in the night before settling :( This morning I ended up with him asleep on my chest for a few hours. Well...first have to get him better then work on the sleep again....

it just about time.he's getting older and want more attention from mommy.my DD gonna be 1yr old soon, next 3weeks. her napping time was not really the same for the past 2weeks.she got up at 7am, before her morning nap was at 9.30am but now,i mean today is at 11.30am and just for 30mins instead of 1-2hours. there it goes obviously her afternoon nap will be after 3pm instead of 1.30pm (like before). and i realize...oh my DD gonna be a big girl already, she wants to be woth mommy more than her napping time.she wants to chitchat,to do this and that, all with mommy and daddy.but most of the time is mommy :)

well funnily enough his nose is a bit runny today, but he's never been like this when sick before....I will try putting him down for his nap tomorrow a bit later, maybe 15-30 mins or so and see what happens.

If he is taking longer to go to sleep, and waking during the night - it might be possible he is needing less sleep during the day? First check that it isnt illness related (i'm sure you already have). But It wouldnt be unusal for him to be getting tired later in the day or even be switching to only needing 1 sleep during the day, or one later large nap later in the morning with a mini nap in the afternoon. If he is taking a long time to go to sleep even when you are comforting him - its possible he might not be quite ready to sleep at that time anymore. perhaps at his usual sleep times unless you feel that he is exhibiting tired cues you could try just stretching it out half an hour to an hour and see how he reacts (Obviously put him down sooner if he looks/behaves tired). You should be able to judge fairly easily from his reaction whether to change the routine or not - he'll either sleep better/longer or be tired and cranky. DS changed to one longer daytime sleep at this age until he started becoming more physically active and walking and then he switched back to 2 sleeps for a while. Just have a bit of an experiment and go with whatever you feel he responds best to.

thanks, hoping it's a phase! Not sure whether I should try pushing his nap times back....today for example, he didn't go to sleep until ten to 10 and then when we put him down at 1.30, despite attending to him, didn't go to sleep until just after 2pm? any thoughts?

It does sound like separation anxiety - this usually begins at 9-10 months of age. If this is what it is - it is just a phase. They naturally learn quite quickly that even when you go out of the room you are still there, and you always come back after nap time.
