I have a 2 year old DS who has practically taken me 2 years to get to sleep through the night and now my almost 4 year old DD is waking up through out the night, up to 4 times (i cried her out at 6 months and she has since then been a good sleeper) I took the side of her cot off in January as thought that she needed to be a big girl in her bed as all her friends were and have commented when in her room, she has never attempted to climb out so was really not bothered about the side on her bed, silly me for doing this I know! Initially because I was so tired I let her come into our bed and sleep then realised that I needed to deal with it so for the past month as soon as I hear her wake, or come out of her bedroom I am straight up and take her back to bed.

How do I stop this though, I am so tired now of this constant waking. Sometimes she does sleep through and occasionally only wakes once so I know she can do it and there is nothing waking her. If she is not up through the night then she wakes at 5.30 in the morning which I am used to as my DS does this a lot, I also work part-time and have to wake them at 6am in term time.

I don't want to put a stair gate on her bedroom door as she will wake her brother.
I have tried praising her and talking to her when she does sleep through and making a big fuss and giving her treats.
I have spoken to her teacher who has talked to the class in circle time about sleeping in their beds and not waking mummy and daddy.
The only thing that I have not started is a star chart - is this my only option ??

Help and advice greatly needed?

Thanks everyone so far, Ladybird I was the sahm until January and have just started work but because I'm Part-time I have continued to deal with everything however I love your story. My DD is a real mummies girls so I am going to get DH to take her back and see if that works, I hadn't thought if this. He helped me with the crying out too and did the night feeds when I stopped breastfeeding and he was always the missing link with this. Thanks for your advice - will let u know :-))

We had the same problem with our 2 year old. She slept straight throught the night from about 7 months old with the help of 'cry-it-out'. When we put her in a big girl bed at 18 months she wasn't fazed at all and continued to sleep well then at 2 she started to wake up to 4 times in the night and just come into our bedroom and try and get in with us! For a month this would happen every night and I would always take her straight back to bed, tuck her in, give her a kiss and leave. Within an hour, she'd be back. I was just starting to reach the end of my tether when I was really sick one night and told my husband that he's have to deal with her that night and to our surprise she only came in once that night. The same again the next night, so from then on we agreed we'd see if him doing it made a difference. Within 2 weeks she was back to sleeping through and even though she now wakes occasionally it's nowhere near as bad as it was! Because my husband works full time and i'm a sahm I was always the one to get up in the night with her but it seemeed what she really needed was a bit of no-nonsense talk from her daddy to sort it out!

Hey Claire, I understand it’s quite tough to be at work if you have not slept last night.

My son did this until he was about five, I used to let him sleep in between us but DH got sick of it so for a week every time he came in our room DH would turn him round and put him back to bed some nights this would happen 6 times! After a week he stopped coming in to us.

Hi Flower Girl Me and my friend are both going through this, my friend for longer than me. My DH works full-time and me part-time. I have been advised by many people that you have to deal with it for it to get any better, that letting them sleep with you is not going to make the problem go away however I have tried to deal with it but the problem has not gone away. Im now going to look into buying her a new big girl bed and see if this has any affect, I've chatted to my friend this morning about diets and day sleep and I have to say if she naps in the day she is better at night although still wakes, however if she naps in the day she does not go to bed until late and that is another problem. Should I put a bed on the floor for her so she can sleep in our room? I remember my mum did this for me when i was about 8 as i had night terrors??!! As with all this issues im hoping it will just stop but I can feel its one of those issues that is going to take a long time.....I have to say it was easier when I was up feeding all night!!!

I am having a similar situation right now. For the past 6 months or so, our 3 years old would wake up between 3-5.30am and walk, in the darkness, into our room and sleep between DH and I. Before you put a gate infront of his room and we would find him on the mat by the gate - fast asleep. Then we removed the gate, and that's when it all started. In the beginning we would walk him back and tuck him back to sleep but he would be back in our bed within 30 minutes. DH and I work full time, it's tiring to have a 'break' in our sleep ... so of late, we just let LO sleep between us. I want this to stop though .... but how??
