Waiting for milk to come in - help!!!

Hi ladies I gave birth 4days ago and although I do see traces of milk my baby defo isn't getting enough as he has started crying all night for feeds. My husband is pushing me to top us with some formula til the milk comes in which I really don't want to but am I starving my baby :(

Thanks kiwispers - it's now 850pm - hes had a good feed and he's howling :( we hav also changed his nappy. He's Been so peaceful all day - could it be colic?

Basically newborns need to eat and sleep, they don't need toys waved in front of their faces or to be passed around from adult to adult. As a rough guide, try to start settling your newborn down for a sleep within 1 hour of them waking, aiming for her to be asleep within 90 min of waking. At night try to settle back to sleep straight after a feed, keep the lights dim and the room quiet so her body learns day from night as soon as possible. Swaddling is very calming for most babies.

keep feeding and also try swaddling after a feed, your aby may not be crying out of hunger but rather out of tiredness/over stimulation.

Thanks ladies milk seems to e better today and I hav an lc coming on tues - but how do I deal with crying n meantime?

tell your husband your baby is not starving and your milk gradually transitions from colostrum to regular milk. The need to suck a lot to stimulate yorur supply. The worst thing you can do is top up with formula as they will then suck less on youand that will then affect your supply. If you really think your baby seems too hungry then book and appointment with a qualified LC, they can check that your baby is feeding the right way from the nipple so that they are getting to the milk properly. I actually think everyone who plans to breastfeed should budget for a visit from an LC as its the best way to make sure they are off to a good start. Its only been 4 days, most women's milk comes in around day 3-4, some earlier some later I'm guessing in a day or so you will feel very engorged! In the meantime colostrum is very concentrates so your baby only needs a little. Their stomach is tiny at this stage

hi mols, congratulations on the birth of your baby! keep on breastfeeding, as often as you can. the more you feed, the quicker your milk with come in. dont know if you have time, but this was really helpful when i had my baby in january. good luck!
