Thank you ladies! DH wants to get it done but I am very apprehensive about the whole thing. angel joy, just yesterday I came to know about tooth cell banking, will be interesting to read more about it! Tiptoptoni, as per my research, most companies bank for 25 years because the researchers still don't know about the quality of these cells beyond that time. Please correct me if my info is outdated.

the only reason as all the OP's have mentioned here was delayed cord clamping only. i am a micrpbiologist myself so i was very keen to bank stem cells since i studied them :) but now i am looking towards banking tooth cell,research is still undergoing but they are more promising then cord blood cells, and i have the whole year to decide.

There is basically just one reason not to do it, because it involves premature/immediate cord clamping therefore taking all the blood (iron, zinc, stem cells) from the placenta/cord that would otherwise be transferred to your baby at birth. A lot of researchers feel that nature meant for babies to get this extra blood at birth and that "iron deficiencies" observed at 6 months may in fact be caused by this. To be fair, others disagree that a true benefit has been shown but right now WHO does recommend delayed clamping when possible. It's for this reason that we chose not not clamp early and therefore not bank. I had a c-section btw, you can delay even with a c-section. Interestingly when I discussed this with the rep from one of the blood bank companies, he agreed there were benefits in delayed clamping, and said "you can't have your cake and eat it too". I can't help but wonder if in the future scientists will discover more benefits in the natural transfer of stem cells at birth via delayed clamping, basically I was afraid to mess with mother nature.

I also researched this when i was looking into it. The only benefit for not doing it was the delayed cord clamping, however you also have to weigh up losing out on that potential benefit (confusingly some research shows that delayed cord clamping also causes problems) of delayed cord clamping vs missing out on the benefits of stem cell technology already available today and who knows what benefits in 5, 10 15 yrs time. I think if you can possibly afford it, it's a fantastic thing to do. You can store longer than 25 years. The price generally only includes for 25 year storage but you then should have the option to continue after this time period. Happy35 - are you saying you need to have a natural birth to do cord blood banking? If so this is not the case. You can definitely do it with a C section too.

Yup, I agree with Happy35. A heck of a lot of research that says that it is best to wait until the baby gets all the blood from the placenta before cutting the cord. If cord is clamped early baby misses out on 1/3 of their blood supply. Yikes!

There is a benefit in delaying cord clamping ...you have to mention that if you have a natural birth. In that case they can't take the stem cells. I have read enough of the positives of storing the cord blood (and now even cord tissues and a piece of umbilical cord), I want to know if anyone of you decided not to go for it after a good research, and why. The gynaec I saw first couple of months of pregnancy was over zealous about it and handed over all the pamphlets she had of all the companies. She is at a clinic i must add. When i shifted to my current gynaec (Belhoul hospital) at about 3 months, she seemed to have neutral view about it, somehow i sensed that she is not very keen about it but won't say negative if parents want to do it. Any suggestion/point of view is welcome ladies. Also, which company did you chose? If we do opt for it, our main concern is that if we do need it, the cost should include the transportation, and bank should be able to deliver the sample anywhere in the world at the shortest possible time. Does Dubai Cord Blood and Research Centre provides services only to govt hospitals?
