Hello ladies :)

Just wondering if someone would like to share what they have learned from birth classes / antenatal classes.

I am due in Dec 12, but I have a feeling he will surprise me before Nov. ends and till now I have vague idea of what to do during labour, actual delivery, techniques if there are any... I am relying on YouTube for childbirth informations.

There is probably not much more you can learn from a childbirth class that you won't find access to in books or online. However, I really recommend taking a class as it builds up confidence. You can have all your questioned answered by a registered professional and it really prepares you for childbirth as well as the baby. In my case, it also alleviated some of the exaggerated fears I had about labor pain. Best of all, it is a great experience that you and your husband can learn from together. It is highly unlikely that men take the initiative to go and read up material on the net. They get a good understanding of the process in a childbirth class and they can learn their role as a supporter/partner during labor better.

I learnt a lot about how to care for the baby when you take it home. How to bath them, only to use cotton wool dipped in cooled boiled water to clean their bottoms (not baby wipes), some breathing techniques, some good contacts for a lactation consultant who helped with the breastfeeding technique.

Hi Hassli I did antenatal classes for my first baby and whilst I didn't learn anything new about the birth itself I did make a great group of friends. It was wonderful in those first scary months to have people around who were going through the same things. We spent a lot of time together and I would have been lost without them. We are now spread all over the world but I love hearing how their children are growing up. I also found it useful to do a hospital visit before the birth. It's just useful to know to the procedure, where to park, where to go, what you need to do on arrival etc. Easier to work it out beforehand than when you are in labour!

Hi Hassli, Although I've been to one and enjoyed it, there was nothing I couldn't have read from a book. It was useful to know what pain relieves you can have, what are the downsides of them, what happens in emergency cases etc. I think it was more useful for my husband, I would have never expected him to read such books. :D
