Hello All,

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and am looking at different hospital packages to go with. I recently received a quote of 32K from DAMAN, which I find to be completely ridiculous so I guess hospital package is the way to go. I've heard good things about Dr. Hiba at NMC who delivers out of City and I've had good experiences with both City and Welcare Hospital, but no OBGYN experience. I'm really looking for a hands off doctor thats pro VBAC and pro natural childbirth but at the same time she'll tell you exactly what you need to hear. Ive read good things about DrBraithwaite @American but I also heard they push Csections at American and Dr. Luthra at Medcare Jumeirah. I don't really care about the location of the hospital, I'm just looking to have a good doctor/experience.

OP, I only got a hospital tour of Latifa hospital similar to what you describe (ie, all smiles and open doors and friendly chatting with the doctors/nurses) because I knew a senior midwife working there and made a private appointment with her for that purpose. Ultimately I decided to deliver my children at Latifa because I was happy with staff commitment for the baby's wellbeing in every problematic situation and for adhering to UN Baby Friendly Initiative guidelines, the not-for-profit aspect of the hospital's ethos, staff experience with most delivery room critical situations, but also because I am comfortable with Arab culture and am used to the weird quirks that come along with it.The doctors and staff are overwhelmingly either Arab (Emirati and others) or South Indian. I knew beforehand that it's a teaching hospital for the young women at Dubai Medical College for Girls, and wrote stuff in the birth plan to keep the teenagers out of my active delivery room :) Hi Apricot, I don't think I can say I'm that comfortable with Arab culture, not in a hospital setting. I went to a predominantly Arab grade school and high school and while I'm comfortable with some aspects of their culture I'm not too sure I'd be comfortable at Latifa. I've heard a lot of good things about it but I'm not particularly fond of the shared L&D room and the potential unavailability of a private room afterwards. My daughter had an Arab doctor here who diagnosed her severe pneumonia, which I'm thankful for, but it was like he was untouchable. He NEVER asked us if we had any questions and before he even finished answering a question he was halfway out the door not expecting another one! It was sort of like we weren't supposed to ask questions and we were the odd ones. I know all Arab doctors aren't that way (the ones in America surely aren't) but it definitely rubbed me the wrong way. :-/ I also found that City Hospital does tours every Friday at 11am and at 4pm. You have to be super prompt I was told but I plan on going there on the 2nd.

My son was born in the American hospital a month ago and I had a great experience. I had a natural, unmedicated birth and was never pressured into a c-section or any other kind of intervention. My ob/gyn was dr. Mia Branch and I loved her, she was extremely no-nonsense and a breath of fresh air compared to overly concerned "just have a c-section" doctors and the opposite "channel the power of a fertility goddess" hippie approach. She just let me get on with it and do whatever I wanted.

Hi ladies, thanks for your responses. I guess I'm going about this all wrong. It would help if the hospitals had like an open day or a tour of the hospital day like the hospitals in America do. You go on the hospital tour get to meet a couple of the doctors and then you feel pretty comfortable with your decision. Is the only way to do that here to pay 500 plus AED for individual appointments with 3-4 doctors???

Dr.Luthra at Medcare...she is a no nonsense person who puts your health and baby's care about all else... I speak out of personal experience as she has got my GD under strict control and plans to try out natural birth ....even though I am pushing for c-section!
