New cat chasing old cat! Advice on how to keep the peace please.
Hi there, looking for advice. Two weeks ago we adopted a rescue cat from Sharjah as a companion for our existing cat as we had lost his other companion last year to cancer. Well, the new cat is lovely, she is very sweet and loving with us, and follows us around like a shadow. She is a two year old Persian cross. Our existing cat is 7 and a huge Maine Coon boy that is more like the Lion in Wizard of Oz - no courage :) In the first week we kept her in a separate room, gradually leaving a small opening for her to see out and him to see in. All going well, till we had them in the same room together - she chases him and he runs away hissing. Two nights ago we had fighting break out and he now refuses to come downstairs. They have sometimes been in the same room and tolerated each other from a distance but now he just seems terrified. We still feed them separately and they have separate litters. I guess some territory war is going on, but we are now worried about him not venturing outside the bedroom. We carry him down to his litter tray and food bowls, but as soon as he is finished he runs back upstairs. Any suggestions on how we can move forward? TIA
