DD is 3 months and I've breastfed til now, but my milk is drying up as she is now in nursery all day and on formula. I only breastfeed at night and since she is sleeping longer I maybe only do one breastfeed a night. Supply has gone right down. Many, many women continue nursing (and express milk) after they go back to work. Yes, it's inconvenient, but it's something you may want to consider if/when you have baby #2. Returning to work doesn't have to mean the end to breastfeeding. Here in UAE you are legally protected to take breaks to express milk until your baby is at least 18 months. It makes me sad to think that returning to work must mean the end to nursing to may mums and babies. I know Meagle - problem is that my office has nowhere private to express. I bought a fancy super dooper bells and whistles double electric pump for this purpose but the only place I would have been able to express was either in the toilet or in my car! I leave 1hr early to fetch DD from nursery but unfortunately despite my best efforts to keep up supply, because I am not with her all day I think my hormones have dried up my supply. I really wish there was a huge overhaul to mothers' rights here - starting with more maternity leave, and flexitime. agree TDB - i am completely shocked by the rubbish mothers rights here. truly awful.

Thank you all! Persepolis, I plan to quit after baby number 2 - there is no way I could handle 2 LOs with a full time job - defo take some time out and return to the workforce when they're older. Will start on the pill but worried this isn't 100% foolproof. Oh well, what will be will be - I will probs be posting on here next month asking how to handle 2 under the age of 1! lol Nooooooooo TDB! As you had a c-section you need to be really careful not to get pregnant so quickly. You might be ok but post c-section if you get pregnant within a year the the risk of complications is much higher. No contraception is 100% foolproof but as AnonDubai says, the chances are slim on the pill - as long as you are taking it correctly. If you forget one, use condoms until it's safe again.

With my first son I did combination BF and FF until he was eight months and my period didn't come until he was 14 months! [b'>My daughter was exclusively breast fed and my period started when she was 6 weeks old.[/b'> 3rd son stopped BF at 6 weeks due to medical reasons period came right away but he's now 20 months and I've only just stopped lactating! That's so unfair! It's lovely having a break from periods.

To answer your original question, it is possible to get pregnant while breast feeding..! I got my period five months after I had my son and was EBF and not on any BC and got preggers when he was 8 months... right when he started sleeping through the night. I love it, though. It was obviously a surprise and not planned but not prevented either Lol. We wanted more kids and I figured I'm already losing sleep, changing diapers and all so might as well throw another one into the mix! ;) I still feel like one more baby is missing from the family but my body cannot take another pregnancy for another couple of years.... Hopefully! BC scares me a bit and how it messes with your system so hubby is on BC duty! Haha <em>edited by Chi2dxb on 14/03/2013</em>

Breastfeeding is not an effective contraceptive (i speak from experience :) ) Also from my own experience, it is near impossible to maintain milk supply just by expressing, and doing it at work is incredibly difficult. I breastfed both my babies as long as I could, then switched exclusively to formula and they are healthy, happy kids. dont sweat the small stuff :)

Yes, many women have stories of how they got pregnant whilst on the pill, but you can know the truth for yourself...

Our bodies are funny things so yes you can get pregnant while BF that's how 3 of my friends are on baby no. 4 ? Yes there is a contraception pill you can take while bfing. When I had baby no 1 at Corniche hospital in AD they gave it to me as they said its best to wait a year before getting pregnant again. The contraceptive injection is also ok while bfing but does have side effects and is not recommended to use for more than 2 years. <em>edited by starsouthern on 13/03/2013</em>

HiTDB AnonDubai is right - LAM only works if you practice ecological bfing (i.e. bf a lot) and all those conditions are met. I got pg twice while bfing so it definitely can happen (although I have two 2.5 year gaps between mine). Incidentally... I know it's not the main subject of the thread but 18 months sounds like a v small gap to me if you are already back at work and feeling the strain. Maybe I'm just a a wimp - lol! Good luck x

From the way you describe your situation, yes, you could definitely get pregnant. The LAM method has a very high rate of effectiveness, but for that 4 conditions must be met: 1. Breast only, no pacifiers or bottles at all, 2. Baby should be under 6 months of age. 3. Period should not have returned. 4. Mother must not go 4 hours without feeding. Those are pretty strict requirements so I generally believe that the LAM method is unreliable. As Daza said, you will ovulate once before you get your period. I believe the pill to use whilst breast feeding is called Cerazette. My period came back when my daughter was 9 months-old and I was breast feeding her a lot. My son is currently 9 months-old and I have not gotten my period yet. Although I understand why you don't want to get pregnant, I have to say that it is nice having kids close in age. My two girls are 18 months apart and it was difficult for the first two years but now they are like two peas in a pod.

As a number of my friends with children very close together can attest to, YES you can get pregnant whilst still breastfeeding. Even if you haven't gotten your period back yet you don't know when it is coming and you can get pregnant when you ovulate before your first period. When it does restart it's common to be extra fertile. So don't take any chances! As for how long it will take to get your period back, there's no set answer. It generally comes back pretty quickly once you stop breastfeeding but can also come back before you stop. My first two pregnancies it came back shortly after stopping breastfeeding, the third it came back before I stopped (although I breastfed for longer) and the fourth I'll have to wait and see! No idea about the pill and breastfeeding.
