Just wondering when you started brushing LO's teeth and which toothbrush and toothpaste you recommend?

DD is 11 months old and has 4 teeth, I havent started yet!

Thanks!

I was told by the Dr that until DD has several teeth it is sufficient to clean the ones she does have by wiping with a wet piece of gauze. I also bought a toothbrush set from C4, it's the brand Pigeon which is generally quite good, and it has 3 "toothbrushes", the stage 1 and 2 are not toothbrushes in the common sense but rather soft rubber with little spikes etc to moderately clean teeth but mostly calm the gums and LOs used to holding a toothbrush. I noticed a wide variety of babies and kids toothpastes at C4 in MCC recently but as DD only has 2 teeth I haven't researched it further. You could probably find what you need there.

My Sister in Law is a dentist and says the earlier you start brushing, the better - she often has to remove children's milk teeth because they are given too much juice and their teeth aren't brushed so they have decayed :( She says that if possible, only use mint toothpaste rather other flavours so that they get used to it from the word go and won't reject 'normal' toothpaste when they're older. I use the Colgate Smiles 0-3 children's paste for my 2 year old and he happily brushes away!

I second kiwispiers , I too start with water and then start using fluoride-free tooth paste. My 2 yr old LO is still not spitting out tooth paste so I will stick to these for the time being and then gradually move to a fluoride toothpaste something with a 250ppm to 400 ppm fluoride content. Hope this helps.

I just used water, starting from around 7 months (whenever they get teeth). Now I use a fluoride free toothpaste, not that I am necessarily anti fluoride but I don't really think its a good idea to use it before they can spit it out.

I start brushing as soon as a tooth is through, it's all a bit hazy but I think just with water at first. Then an age appropriate toothpaste, fluoride or not depending on your views. Same with the toothbrush, just an age appropriate one. I've always used minty toothpastes, not the vile fruit or bubblegum ones. I've also been told that plain baking soda is good. I need to research it and if it has basis, I'll be using that for my currently teething baby.
