When our LO is 6 weeks old, hubby has 10 days off. I'm considering a trip home to USA. I'm not sure if it it's the perfect time to travel or am I messing with any chance of a sleep routine?

When I first had my first baby, I was like no way am traveling with a small baby. Then we had a trip when she was 4 months old. It was easy breezy. All the worry and stress was in my mind. I bf so it was really very practical. She didn't cry or anything during take off or landing. The passenger next to us, when we were leaving the plane congratulated us saying, this is the best behaving baby I have ever seen ^^. The we flew when she was around 8 months. That was a tough one as its around the separation anxiety phase. I wasn't aware if it and now I know I will never fly again with a bigger baby. Of course we flew when she was around one and a half...I am just glad my hubby was with me and won't consider flying alone with a toddler lol So bottom line: if its ur first, enjoy flying when they are small. The younger the better lol. Only now, with hindsight I know it. But I understand that a new mommy would find it a hard thing to consider. You will only know it when you go thru it :)

I totally agree with you TDB i am so worried about my canada trip in Aug my DD will be 23 months old and i do not know how i will be able to keep her calm lol.. i remember you saying to invest in a tablet or so to keep them busy.. need to get one beforehand.. so ErinLynnEmail.. GO FOR IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN lol.. i have to travel to canada too in june when my son would be 26 month old. he is already hyperactive and the trip last year just passed :) i bought the tablet but he was not interested in it at all. just watched sesame street for some time. we took the car seat so he was strapped in it most of the time and slept peacefully. hope this trip goes fine too.

Go for it! You can take them anywhere when they are that age, and assuming you only have 1, I would do it. As for the sleep routine, bubba being so young, they will get right back into the sleep routine once you get home. I am lucky with my DD, she was sleeping through since 4 weeks old, as I started the sleep routine early as I had to get back to work, I used the method of Tizzie Halls- Save Our Sleep. Yes- sleep routines from a very young age is not for everyone but it worked well for me. I delivered back in Oz and my little ones first plane ride was when she was 2 weeks old. Good-luck with whatever you decide xx

I think that a baby is never too young for a sleep routine. I may be shouted down, but Gina Ford (the baby nazi) saved my life after the first baby just would not sleep. The second and third were put into a "sleep routine" from their second day on the earth, and it worked for all of us. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but it really helped our family, especially through bouts of post natal depression. We travelled a LOT when the kids were small, and when you are flying, you just have to go with the flow, but as soon as we arrived at our destination we put them straight into the local time and the routine. Within a day or so, the babies were fine. (took a while longer for the adults). From birth to around 10 months, I found travelling with a baby easier as they are not mobile, and sleep a lot. From crawling to 2 years, it is a nightmare, although we did have a couple of good trips, I wouldn't recommend it, as they can not be reasoned with, and will be upset if they want to be moving about and the plane is about to take off. That said, sometimes you just have to do it, and accept that it will probably be awful.

6 weeks is far too young for a sleep routine, predictable sleep rhythms really only begin to develop from around 4 months. The jetlag for YOU might be hard on top of normal sleep deprivation at at that point, but it is an easy age to travel as far as the baby, especially if breastfeeding as all they do at that age is sleep and eat and are quite happy to be in your arms for the entire flight or swaddled in the bassinet.

I traveled to the USA when my DS was 5 weeks old. It was the easiest trip in the world. We never even brought a stroller because he was in the baby carrier. He lay in my lap during both flights...

i think your LO is still too young for a sleep routine so i don't think you will be messing anything up.. i say if you have a chance to go why not.. LO will probably sleep through out most of the flight due to the noise (white noise) and get up to feed. if your breastfeeding then it will not be diffcult..
