myringotomy without tubes

Hello, my son who is only 5 years old have been asked to go through a myringotomy surgery to clear fluid behind his ear drums. The ENT first suggested we insert tubes however as this would result my son having to wear ear plugs every time he has a bath or swim we didn’t think this was an option. My son loves water. He then suggested we do a myringotomy without inserting tubes. This would mean he would just do the incision to clean the ears.
I am wondering if there are others who had this procedure for their kids? I am very worried therefore any information will be helpful.
