I just rented a car a couple of weeks ago as we just sold one of ours. I rented from Budget and they didn't want my Emirates license at all as they need one that has been held for at least 1 year so I gave my U.K. License and my UAE address. So I can't see you will have any problem hiring a car at all. However my understanding is that you should get your UAE licence asap if you have residency. Good luck!

You'll need to check with the individual rental companies but I 'think' it'll go something like this: You can rent a car on your US license when you arrive, but as soon as you have your residency, you'll have to head to the traffic department and exchange your US license for a UAE one - this process is easy once you have all the correct documents and doesn't take long. Once you have your UAE license you'll need to go back to the car rental company and give them all those details for them to update on your rental. But as I said, check with the car rental companies first.

Hi girls. From my recent posts here, you can tell I'm excited and stressed about all the details of our upcoming move to the UAE! here is one more question: We both have driver's license from the US, and think we could just rent a car for the first weeks there until we buy a car. However, some websites are saying that people with UAE residence visa or employment visa will need a UAE driver's license to rent a car. Well, we will be entering with an employment visa and will apply for the residence visa once we arrive. But before we received the residence visa, we can not apply for a UAE driver's license. So, can we actually rent a car in the first month before we have 1) a UAE residence visa, and 2) a UAE driver's license?? How did you all rent or drive a car when you first moved to the UAE? Thank you!!
