Internet service providers in Dubai

Hi,

We're due to arrive in Dubai in three weeks and are in the process of having an internet connection installed.

I see that Du and Etisalat have a cartel and set prices at obscene levels, so wondered if a cost effective solution exists? I only need a home connection to connect to Netflix, so frankly if I can't do that we have no need of a home TV or internet package at all. Is Netflix available in Dubai? Is the program selection any good, or is it much more restrictive?

In the UK, we're used to paying about US$30-35 for a 20Mbps connection, and although I'm not expecting to be able to keep paying normal "rest of World" prices whilst in Dubai, I'd like advice on what solutions are available at a price that isn't totally insane.

Thanks!

Thanks! Looked on line, and it seems Du's cheapest package is 379 or £79. Or about 3x the price of the rest of the World! I've used a proxy server before to get UK Netflix whilst in Singapore, but ...
Yes DU don't offer that option anymore. Unfortunately you're going to find many things cost far more here than they do elsewhere, you just have to get used to it and stop comparing. It is what it is,

Etisalat do just home internet services starting at 299dhs excl VAT. Really depends where you end up living as some areas are Etisalat or DU exclusive so you might not have a choice. Visit both their websites.

Thanks. A couple of hundred is do-able, but the cheapest I've seen is 379, and at that cost, I'd be content just to get a 3Gb/mth package on my phone. Do you know who is offering deals at less than that?

I understand. But as ranstone rightly says, you'll end up needing an internet connection as it's pretty impossible to live without one. You could take take a super basic package for a couple of hundred dhs a month, then watch your Netflix and other things through that. Probably a better option.

The reality is you will be living in Dubai not the UK and presumably will be paid here and not the UK ...... many things will be way more expensive than the UK and in the end it becomes pointless keep converting it back (in my humble opinion) There are many ways to watch British TV and films here at minimal or no cost but they all require an Internet connection.

What I mean is that in the UK, having paid the Amazon Prime membership you get access to only about 10% of their content. The rest is just pay per view. So it's not a popular service - everyone uses Netflix. Regarding the cost of home broadband, since we use it only to watch Netflix, then we pay £5.99/mth for Netflix itself, and £24.99/mth for broadband, so £372/yr (US$483/yr). To do this in the UAE would cost over $1,500/yr, so I'd favour a DVD library. I watch maybe 30 or 40 movies a year, you see, so at $10/movie, that's okay. $40/movie isn't.

What? I watch ALL my tv shows through Netflix and Prime, definitely not just for movies - also if you have a three letter device that cannot be named, you can access the UK and US versions and not just the UAE one. We use the Amazon Firestick, which gives access to a ton of stuff - including Netflix.

TBH, whilst Netflix is excellent, Amazon Prime is a bottom tier budget trash here in the UK. Just paying for the right to rent movies!! Add the $1500/year to the $120 Prime subscription, it's paramount to paying US$1620/year DVD rental store membership. We can't possibly justify that.

Thanks guys. I think we'll try going without then. We have data on mobile phones. Are dvd rental shops a thing over there to supply video entertainment?
Nope. No such thing here. Most people have Netflix or Amazon Prime. You used to be able to just get internet at home, but I think they stopped doing that. Even a mobile data package is going to cost you a couple of hundred Dhs a month.

Yup Etisalat and DU are you're only options. Netflix has slightly restricted content, due to the fact that OSN have the rights to many shows here, so they won't appear there. DU have some decent eals on packages at the moment, but you're still going to pay 400-500dhs a month.

Etisalat and Du are the only options in Dubai ...... the only other option is using mobile data which is more expensive and still Etisalat and du the only option. Once you have your internet Netflix is available with good content.
