Our condolences to their friends and families
The tragic death of four heroic men made headline news in the UAE in late December, when it was announced that the four-member crew from The National Search and Rescue Center in RAK have been in a deadly accident.
While attempting to perform their job, just like any other day of saving lives, the four men were on a mission to rescue a man injured on the mountains of Jabal Jais in Ras Al Khaimah.
Unfortunately, their Agusta 139 rescue helicopter collided into the world’s longest zip line in the Jais Mountain resulting in their demise.
A tragic and sad end to 2018, the four were later identified as three Emirati men and one South African expat:
- Pilot: Saqr Saeed Mohamed Abdullah AlYamahi
- Pilot: Hameed Mohamed Obaid AlZa'abi
- Navigator: Jasim Abdullah Ali Tunaiji
- First Aid Man: Mark Roxburgh
The martyrs were unable to reach the injured man as the helicopter clipped the zip line on the UAE’s highest peak, Jabal Jais Mountain.
The incident took place at 5:50 pm on Saturday, December 29, 2018 and has since then started an investigation into the case.
After the accident took place in Ras Al Khaimah, Toroverde, the company behind the zip line in RAK suspended all zipline flights until further notice and investigation into the matter.
However, almost two weeks later, the Jebel Jais Flight zip line is now open to the public again after necessary maintenance to ensure flyer’s safety.
Ras Al Khaimah’s zip line, called “Jebel Jais Flight,” is the world’s longest zip line coming in at a 2.8 km long – that’s equivalent to 28 football fields and is at 1,680m above sea level in the UAE.
It is located on the UAE’s highest mountain peak.
Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building in Downtown Dubai, is at 828m above sea level – which makes the zip line a very high adrenaline option for thrill seekers in the UAE.
The zip line is a popular adventure option for residents and tourists in the UAE.
