Many residents of Dubai Marina were left very surprised on Thursday afternoon, as something had caused the water to turn a deep, thick orange colour.

To begin with, the cause of the spill or leak was unclear, and residents took to social media to share their surprise over the occurrence.

But now after an investigation by Dubai Municipality, it seems that there was no reason to worry.

In fact, the reason behind the new water colour is somewhat of an unsurprising reason; it was harmless construction material.

The authorities gave the all-clear to the water just 24 hours after it appeared, as they announced that they change in colour was due to a chemical called 'Bentonite'. Bentonite only changes the colour of the water it's in, and there are no harmful effects on people's health or the environment.

The substance came from a construction site in Qarn Al Sabkha, which is connected to the Marina through a drainage system.

A team is now working to clean the water entirely.
