2018 is going quite a busy year for Saudi Arabia with two major sporting events being hosted in the Kingdom. The one event is the Race of Champions motorsport event and then the World Boxing Supreme Series Cruiserweight final.
This is quite an important occasion for Saudi as this will be the first international motorsport event in Saudi Arabia and the first city in the Middle East to host the Race of Champions.
The motorsport event will be held in the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh and is causing great excitement throughout the Kingdom. On the official website of Race of Champions it was announced that this is going to be a family event with activities for everyone.
The official statement read: "Further details, driver announcements and exact dates for ROC's Saudi Arabian debut will be announced shortly, but the General Sports Authority has confirmed that Race Of Champions will be a family event, open to both genders, and feature drivers, exhibitions and activities all suitable for the Kingdom's specific cultural requirements."
The Race of Champions is a two day event where the world’s best drivers from numerous types of motorsport face off against one another to stand a chance to win the Henri Toivonen Memorial trophy.
Jeddah will be hosting the World Boxing Supreme Series Cruiserweight final in May and spectators will be able to see the two best fighters in the cruiserweight division battle for the title. Local fighters will also have their chance to show off their skills in the ring as a part of the event.
No indication has been given that this will be a family event but it is already a big step-up allowing families to attend the Race of Champions. Women in Saudi Arabia was allowed in a sport stadium for the first time in history on the 2017 National Day. Thus far, this will be the second time that women are allowed to attend an event at a sport stadium.
The motorsport event is to celebrate women being allowed to drive in the Kingdom as of July 2018 while the boxing event it to help promote boxing in Saudi Arabia.
Both the events are also to promote the entertainment scene in Saudi and will hopefully be the first of many international sporting events being hosted in the country. This is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative to promote the Kingdom and create alternative income streams other than oil.
