The wait is almost over for women being allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia and some women will soon receive their Saudi driver’s licence!
On Saturday, May 19th, 2018 Saudi traffic department announced that women can apply online to replace their overseas driver’s licence with a Saudi licence.
The tweet from the official Twitter account of the Saudi traffic department read: “We invite all citizens and residents of the Kingdom who wish to replace their valid driving licences which they have obtained from other countries with a Saudi driving licence through registering their information via the website of Saudi Driving LicencePortal for completing the replacement procedures of the licence on Monday, May 21.”
It was announced by a Royal decree in 2017 that women will be allowed to drive in the Kingdom as of June 24th, 2018. Women with a foreign or international driving licence that is recognized by the Kingdom can just convert their driving licence. Women whose foreign driving licence is not recognised or who do not have a driving licence will have to take a driving test to evaluate their knowledge of the Kingdom’s road rules. They will receive their licence on the same day if they pass the test.
Allowing women to drive in Saudi Arabia is part of Saudi’s Vision 2030 to reform the Kingdom. It is also a big movement in women’s rights in Saudi and has created a number of new employment opportunities for women.
