And you have people driving who are texting or talking on their phones (probably about 50% of drivers on the road use their phones at some time) rather than giving 100% attention to the road; or small children bouncing around the car; or IDIOTS who don't drive well at all no matter the circumstances - you can generally pick them out because their rearview mirrors are adjusted so that they can see themselves, not other cars.
exactly i could go on with more reasons too!!! i always wear my seat belt, i always use my hands free if i answer my phone in the car, which is not that often. i always overtake properly and pull back over into the right lane lane, i always watch around me to see what the other cars are going to be doing before they actually do it, its not difficult if you have eyes in your head, but a lot of people here do not. i have been driving along these roads up and down to dubai for many years and have survived so far.......
LOL !!! and of course everyone will say this about their driving....

You were taught how to drive properly most people in the UAE have not had that luxury. The speed limit should be reduced as it has been proven time and time again SPEED KILLS.
BB2 that tells me you know where the speed cameras are.
yeh i know where the speed cameras are but then i am not speeding so it really doesnt matter as i do not slam my brakes on when they are coming, just beware that in abu dhabi now with the average speed ones you cannot speed you have to drive at the just under the speed limit otherwise you will get a fine.

Oh wait, BB2. You have an Abu Dhabi license plate? *That* explains it. AD drivers are the worst of them all.
how do you know if i do have an abu dhabi plate, perhaps i have a dubai plate as my visa is from dubai, you just do not know. and whatever plate i have i do not get speeding tickets, so what does that tell you???
No it's not difficult to drive at 100mph.. It's quite easy. However, whether or not you have control of your vehicle is another issue. Yep you can go straight.. But wait, there are moving cars on the road who will change lanes in a second, there are cars that drift the line without warning, there are potholes in the road, people run out in front of you, things fly out of vehicles, the list goes on and on. So no 100mph is not a safe speed for anyone. Oh and lets not forget the lovely people who suddely slam their brakes for no reason whatsoever..

why because you think the speed is too much. it isnt if you know how to drive, driving at 160 is fine as long as you do not weave in and out, you do not talk on the phone, you wear your seat belt, you do not put your feet up on the dash, yes of course if you have a blow out the more speed you are driving at the more likelihood that you could have an accident, but its not just the speed. the police some years back employed a swedish company to do a 6 month traffic survey and they proved that the speed limit is not the factor causing more accidents, so they increased it to 160 instead of the 140. yes at the weeked there was an accident, why because of the fog and the fact that people were driving too fast, nothing to do with the speed limit at 160. if its foggy and you cannot see you must slow down they proved that with the fog only giving you 50m you should be driving at 78kph which of course people will not do. i noticed on thursday that they had put up new signposts on the abu dhabi dubai highway saying that now the maximum speed limit is 140!!!!
Are you insane BB2? 160 km/h is 100 mph and in no way is it safe to drive that fast! With other cars on the road. Accidents have everything to do with speed - no matter what some Swedish consultant said.
no i am not insane!!!!!! thank you very much, 100mph is not that fast, you are meant to be driving at 70mph in the uk and of course people do go over a little, but it really isnt difficult to drive at 100 going in a straight line its all the lack of awareness around you when you drive. many a time i come up to people driving on any motorway here sitting at 80 kph in the 3rd lane, with no awareness that there are cars going either side of them because they are driving way too slow....... i was taught in the uk and if you overtake someone you then go back to the right you do not stay in the middle lane. i have lived here years and have i got speeding tickets nope, just redone my car again and again no speeding tickets..... unlike some expats who are now complaining that they are getting loads here in abu dhabi because of the new cameras... duh.
Thanks guiness, I was starting to think I was the only one who that that it was a ridiculous speed. It's not safe no matter how careful of a driver you THINK you are. I am sure all of those involved in that accident that day thought they were careful and knew what they were doing too.

I thought the speed limit was 120??
no as i said its 160. when they changed the limit they didnt actually change the speed limit signs, but people knew the speed cameras wouldnt flash until 160, but it was said then that if you were caught driving at 161 you would get a heavier fine than before.
they have now decided to put the speed limit back down to 120 but you have the 20 extra.
they did not change the limit on this road just because of this accident as i said i saw the signs up on the road before the accident on saturday. so obviously they have been thinking about this.
