Thanks to everybody who helped out. Just got back from the Gold Souk. It really is the old Dubai and the real Dubai. Went to quite a few shops but am happy to state found some very nice wholesale jewellers who are based out of London. Am actually very happy with them, their service and their prices. If anybody wants their number do email me on andsmith7 at gmail dot com
Standing corrected, happymommy - you are quite right, it is Al Seef... loving the way travelling along the creek has been made to hassle-free and pleasant, and all that at AED 4 return/no parking meters...
Best way would be to head down SZR / Zabeel Road to the creek opposite the Sheraton & Dubai National Bank. Park there (for free at Al Sabka Station) and use the water bus to the Gold/Spice Souq station (Dh 4 return). These buses run every 15 minutes, last one around 10.30 pm. From this station its about 5 minutes to walk thru the spice souq to the gold souq, and saves you a lot of hassles trying to park on Deira side. Besides, its a lovely ride on the creek! Enjoy, happy to hear someone makes an effort to explore "old Dubai"...
I have just been told to visit a diamond and jewellery wholesaler in the Gold Souk. So will pay them a visit, apparently they supply to many retaili shops.
A hole in the wall but good service and prices. So let's see if I can pick up a bargain
Only been to the Gold and Diamond Park near Times Square and can highly recommend "Dazzle" who assured me they would give EW's who mentioned Shelly a bargain :-)

Also google "gold souk" "jewelers" " gold and diamond park" on this site as there are loads of recommendations and lots of people who know a lot more about these things than me!
