The bottom line is if you put Islam on the form your child will go into Islamic classes, end of. You will never be able to get them out of them if you wanted to. If you put another religion no one will prob follow it up. If you leave it blank administration in some schools will deem your child muslim based on the family names and nationality of the child and parents, once put in Islamic classes again your will never get them out.

You do have to fill this in on all school application forms and Muslim children are required to attend Islamic Studies classes (hours vary from school to school). GCC nationals and children from some Arab countries are required to attend Arabic as a first language as well. I'm at a loss to figure out how they decide for those Arab countries that are multilingual and may not have Arabic as a first language. But I digress... You can apply to the KHDA for an exemption for your children from either Arabic as a first language or Islamic Studies (or both, if you wish). They do ask for an explanation of why you'd like them to be exempt and of course, their decision is based on your own unique circumstances. edited by Simone N on 13/01/2011 I have never known an exemption form Islamic studies for any muslim child, don't believe this happens. Arabic can only be made exempt if you can prove it is detrimental and your child has a learning difficulty.

What about familes who come from countries where Islam is the main faith but have minority Christian followers? We have a Pakistani family in our church back home and his name is Abdul. I'm also quite sure that there will be people who although born Muslim have no wish to follow the faith and that choice should be respected. LOL Joyce. In Islam it is against your religion to denounce your religion and it is a punishable offence. Respect that Hmm, no comment ;)

Embassies can sometimes issue a certificate stating the person's religion, I know most Arab countries do so for their Christian minorities. It is sometimes required for applying for an alcohol license. Not sure whether Western embassies can do the same as religion is usually not registered by the state.

My friend's DH is from Suadi, all the kids have his last name and they've never had to do Islamic studies as on the form they say Christian, the kids do have British Passports though so that might help. well the kids that i know of who have father from iran, mother from wales, they have british passport they had to to islamic studies in ad, but then ministry do have different rules for the different emirates sometimes.

Sorry but I can't understand why a Muslim parent would not want their child to have religion classes. It's not like they ram it down your throat in the schools here. Surely the child deserves to have the information to make their own decision? My parents are atheist but allowed me to study the religion they were born into and decide for myself whether to practice it or not. Don't ram it down throats here? that actually made me laugh out loud! Not seen the cirriculum for social studies then for non islamic kids at around the age of 5 or 6 then have you?! lol!

The only religion in question that the child would be made to study is Islam. In case that is what you want to avoid it will be very difficult if the father has an obviously Muslim name.

What school? I think there are a few that are exempt even though you still have to fill it out on the form That was from the application for JESS.. what are the schools that are exempt from that then?? Thanks Sophia:)) edited by Hannadina on 12/01/2011 It depends on the school and which country you're from! Speak to the regisrar before you fill out the form, you may be able to state your religion as "other". But if your child's birth certificate says "Muslim" then there is not much you can do about it!!

if yr not muslim, put down christian, or whatever. I always put down N/A but have since found out not having a religion is illegal. Who knew? It really doesnt matter, but kids of the islamic faith are required to do islamic studies, kids who are not (of that faith) are not. hth? That is correct. You must state a religion. I believe you would have to do the same when applying for a resident visa.

Well, quite simply, this is a requirement from the MOE. Whatever your unique circumstances, you should be as honest as possible, and that is what they expect. The law here states that if the childs father is a Muslim, then the child will have Islamic classes. That is one example.

If your DH is a Muslim your child will be considered as a Muslim and will have to join in Islamic classes.

So here I am trying to apply for school for my LO and apart from the shocking waitlist, they have umm a question on the application form in which they are asking about the mother's religion, the father's religion and the child's religion and they wrote between brackets ( you have to fill it out and not be left blank), ummm what is that about???? what if you have a unique situation, i mean i do not understand honestly what they expect??? can anyone explain this to me please. Thanks:)))
