Sorry, they've switched back now to Japan. But the reporting this morning has been ongoing.

Airport is mobbed. Some flights leaving. Pearl Square protestors dispersed. Reports of gun fire all over the island. Batelco took their service down earlier as the army moved in. Potentially dozens killed :(

SW, i can appreciate that but isn't it too late to leave now? Airport pretty much shut, bridges to airport shut and only way out via causeway which is only half open... Isn't it best to stay at home and sit it out. But have also been hearing reports that in many areas, business as usual, people at work and only problems in certain areas. From what i'm hearing it's while this thing at the pearl is going off, might open back up later. Biz is not as usual by any means for a lot, stick exchange, banks , ports closed or struggling as staff can't get in! Companies evacuating into Dubai for a few.

so has the FCO been helpful. have they kept you updated, personally i mean. Just wanted to know how good this is really. for future if anything did kick off here in Dubai.. not that i think it will. just thinking. Yes, they are good when needed. When i was in Saudi and there was some incidents, bombs, abduction, decapitations - the FCO were pretty good and wardens messages were sent out regularly. I get wardens messages here but usually only on updates to the travel advise pertaining to UAE - but as there has been no serious incidents here, i presume that they would be as efficient as they were in Saudi.

can I ask UK nationals.. are you registered with the Fco travel thing?. and if so do they email you and keep you updated. Or do they just leave you to read papers etc. they decide for yourself what to do. just asking as to home much support do you get from the embassy.. You register with LOCATE on the country site of FCO and they send you updates and warden messages as to what is advised.

I do think, after chatting to my friend (who is a very calm) that there is a lot of panic, some of which is a tad of an overreaction. Been advised to stay home and sit tight. It's frightening now and not being able to get from A to B is worrying them is what i am getting back. The what if's.

They were told to leave last week. In fairness British expats were not told to leave and missed the writing on the wall.

Yes there has been gunfire, yes some of the roads are blocked by Troops but to be honest I welcome it. Seef has been encircled as they clear the NON PEACEFUL protestors off the round about. There has been violence but this was never going to be dealt with peacefully !!!!!!!! There are roadblocks around some of the local villages. Supermarkets are open etc and some people are out and about. The mobile phones are being controlled and certain blocks are being turned off. All concurrent with martial law. A difficult situation is only made worse by people speculating and inflaming with opinion. Just been messaged that the demonstrators at the Pear R have been given one hour to disperse. The situation is serious and expats for years in Bahrain have had their heads in the sand about this. All the bridges to the airport are shut no one can leave very easily.

Your animals. Hopefully all their shots, rabies test and passports have been ready for awhile!!!! Call friends at home if you are from the UK to see who will take your animals short term if you can get them on the flight with you. The worst case is to have them put down rather than abaonden them....awful I know but if you cant find a place to send them or get them out of the country please do not just leave them, please put them down :(:(:( Maybe there is an animal sanctuary that can help????? Not sure about bringing them into Dubai :( This is the absolute last scenario. I know animals are not high on some lists but this is what I would have to think of :(. Anyway, this is the answer to someones querie below. edited by SueB on 16/03/2011

I find this very distressing. We were supposed to be there next month. You're distressed!!! You should see my facebook page and the panic now hitting expats and what the heck they are meant to do and how to leave, they have pets etc. St Chris wouldn't give their teachers permission to leave, now they can't! Every road is blocked and gun shots everywhere. edited by Sticky Wicket on 16/03/2011 Can I be your friend on Facebook?
