I think expats in Bah are quite protected from some of the reality of what may be happening in local areas, Al Jazeera has some footage that is not overly plesant on it's live blog page. Lots of twitter going on about the hospitals, there is certainly [b'>a movement to destabalise the country by a sector of the population and modern media is allowing them to fuel that.[/b'> edited by Sticky Wicket on 16/03/2011 Are you talking about the majority of 70% shiia population that try to gain their rights, about the young generation of Bahrainis whow want freedom and democracy?? To destabilize what, an oppressive regime that has the intention the ethnically cleanse the country and to change the balance shiia/sunni by "importing " sunni from the neighbouring countries? What what was right for Tunisians, Egyptians and Lybians is not right for the Bahrainis??? What makes it right for Bahrainis to be attacked in THEIR OWN COUNTRY by foreign troops??? And the double standard with which the Americans are treating the situation, just because is a political interest there that the Bahraini royals are accommodating...disgusting Did you see the images of young women with flowers in their hands and signs saying :We will die for Bahrain" This is a generation that will not give up and that wants fair rights for everybody. Why is the royal family from Bahrain so afraid of a constitutional monarchy? And why are the "good" neighbours so eager to help the Bahraini royals?? Just food for thought...

I know this will sound stupid, but can whats happening in Bahrain, happen in Dubai? The Middle East is such a volatile area I don’t think anyone can say with 100% certainty that this couldn’t happen in Dubai. Agree Agree. That's why we have never bought property here. Regarding the Bahraini ladies, I watched a segment on SkyNews yesterday and although I was (somewhat) surprised to see a covered lady on tv speaking her mind, I thought it liberating and a pleasant change (under the circumstances of course).

I meant compared to previous images of Egypt where there were no women at ALL when there was unrest. The Bahraini women I met when I lived there were not meek, mild mannered, stay at home types... they had strong opinions on all manner of things, are well educated and weren't afraid to say what they thought so I haven't been surprised to see Bahraini women on the streets.

This is being re-tweeted all over the internet: @tomgara:‎ Australia got away with joining the Iraq war because nobody noticed us. The UAE should hope Bahrain keeps being labelled a Saudi action.

Was worried about a relative in bahrain as well, but just got a msg saying "not much to worry here, news shown and heard are far from reality, exaggerated and one-sided." In any case, I hope things turn out alright.

I just wanted to add, the protesters are not just Shia and there are many Sunni Muslims involved too. I am hoping the violence ends soon.

Could, but it won't. The situation in Bahrain (with shia minorities, etc) is vastly different to that of the UAE, particularly Dubai. Shia majority in Bahrain - that's why there's so many problems, cos it's ruled by the Sunni Minority. Yes, absolutely right. Typo!

Thoughts and prayers are with you all. How are children in general coping with this unrest? DS was asking about Bahrain this morning as a friend of his moved there last year. He was quite sweetly concerned for him. Can only speak for my friends. To the north of everything in Amwaj a mum & kids are fed up because of the constant disruption to schooling. Her husband has driven around local area this am and the majority of it is fine but they are planning to leave shortly for Dubai. Another friend has arrived back in Bahrain from a holiday this morning and managed to get home safely, he says "army are in charge of all major junctions. Very little traffic and slow going. Troops very friendly but a little jumpy." He also mentioned a few partial road blocks with bins etc but nothing to stop him getting home to a location south of Manama.

IF people need to get out of Bahrain and do get across to Dubai for a short period, I am more than willing to give out a couple of bedrooms free of charge. They would have to put up with a zoo of cats and dogs though!! But seriously, I know it has not come to this yet, but I am sure there will be a lot like me that can offer a helping hand somehow if the need arises.

It is possible to get to the airport, but taking a long time with reroutes. The media coverage is grossly out of context. Roads are blocked both by thugs and military. We are staying home. It is fairly quiet were we are. The black smoke in the photos is the smoke from the tents at Pear Roundabout. The protestors set fire to the tents before they left. Then, the gas canisters inside the tents exploded. It's not the first time they have exploded gas cylinders over the years.

We are evacuating our staff and we are able to book flights. They currently cant get to the airport so we may need to keep changing the flights. If we can get them to Dubai or home with their families we can sort them out from here. We have hotels ready for them when they start arriving tomorrow onwards. We are being told by our Bahraini team that the media reports are over exaggerated. Roads are closed and schools are closed so its far from normal or far from over. Lets home things get back to usual soon. But first lets get them out for their own safety. (We delayed based on local knowledge advising us everything was OK, only the US evacuated yesterday and UK advised late last night).

Can I ask a question which may or may not be a thick question :D Why, in countries like Egypt etc, was most of the world behind 'the people' of the country and change etc, but in Bahrain, 'the people' are being largely described as thugs etc. Thanks.... Politics MB, we need to keep Bah stabilised as Iran sits right next door.

I find this very distressing. We were supposed to be there next month. You're distressed!!! You should see my facebook page and the panic now hitting expats and what the heck they are meant to do and how to leave, they have pets etc. St Chris wouldn't give their teachers permission to leave, now they can't! Every road is blocked and gun shots everywhere. edited by Sticky Wicket on 16/03/2011 Jeez sticky, you have no idea why I am stressed. anyway, why did they leave it so long to leave? perhaps they like to imagine 'it will never happen here' I hope they can all get on a ship with animals to somewhere safer.

Interesting rhetoric on Sky news...."Hundreds of Bahraini riot police have launched an assault on pro-democracy demonstrators in Bahrain's capital Manama" Doesn't really give a fair appraisal of the situation, and no mention of armed thugs going around attacking people.....

Insane comments - thats it i am off here . How ...... dare you !!!! edited by flip on 16/03/2011 Am assuming someone put some comment up and then deleted it or edited it after Flip's reaction.. No i think she reacted to my response to her post, which was a generic comment about heads in sand for expats in Bahrain.
