I have promised a friend back in the uk to bring back some saffron from Dubai.
She is a chef/baker and uses it a lot.she tells me it will be so much cheaper to buy here?
I really have no idea, and don't feel that the supermarkets are the best place to buy and maybe not the best prices.
Any advice would be great. Thanks

Sam7, you caught my mistake! Dhs 200/g is the right price. I second your recommendation for buying saffron in thread form :)

Also in the interest of saving yourself time, as I know I certainly dont have time to get to Deira spice souq, you could buy it from your local supermarket. You just need to ask for it at the counter as they keep it there. I've bought saffron in Australia and its DARN expensive for an teeny eeny box that goes no where. You literally have to savour each strand you get. For the same cost your friend is still going to get ALOT more bang for her buck, especially if she's using it alot. And of course, if she wants to shell out more you can buy her a bundle :-) Best of luck!!

Apricot, I think maybe you missed a zero or two off of your price? Quality saffron will sell for US$2,500-$3,000 per kg, but is more often sold by the gram here to household users, as you only need add such a small amount when cooking. If you have good haggling abilities then I'd recommend you head to the spice souk also, but it would pay to do a bit of homework about how to choose the best saffron. Go for the threads, rather than powder (which is easier to adulterate); the darker the red colour, the better, with no yellow or white bits visible; "sargol" is the best Iranian grade saffron; it should smell floral and sweet, not musty. Happy shopping :)

A chef friend of mine from Australia visited last year and said the Iranian saffron he bought at the spice souk was great quality and a great price (he did haggle though). For whatever reason, he believed that Persian saffron was the best (I have no idea about these things!).

I don't think it will be any cheaper here than in the UK. Real saffron is always going to be expensive and Spanish saffron is reckoned to be the best. Cheap saffron is generally only useful for the color. I've bought saffron in Deira and saffron at Carrefour and there were no noticeable difference. Whatever you do, don't buy that fake safflower "saffron" you see for sale in the touristy part of the spice souk.

Various shops in the street between Al Manal Centre and Rukn Al Mahasin abaya shop sell saffron. This is a shopping area in Deira located behind Naif Police Station. Dhs 100-200/ kg is a fair price, esp since you may buy a fraction of that weight.

You could try the spice souk in Deira and don't forget to use your haggling skills if you do go there ;) http://www.360cities.net/image/grand-souk-deira-spice-market-dubai edited by Alismum on 12/04/2014
