My four letter bank (ba5tards!) has just informed me that I no longer get a free international transfer each month (grrr!).

What is the best way to transfer money back home (to the UK in my case) as I want to avoid the 100dhs charge!

TIA xx

Are any of you charged to receive the transferred money into you bank account back home? Everytime DH sends home money we lose about €200 between the exchange rate and bank charges on the receiving end! What currency are you sending? If you send the money in say Dirhams, you will usually get a terrible rate when it hits your EUR or GBP accounts, regardless of the rate at the exchange place you are sending it from. If you send the money in EUR or GBP or AUD or USD - whatever the currency of the receiving account is - you will generally only be charged a token fee if anything at all. My OZ accounts charge AUD10 to receive TT's..

We use Wall Street Exchange, apparently they have a very interesting exchange rate, and the commission for the tranfer of money to Europe is dirhams 45. It's better to bring cash. We have never been charged by our bank in home country for such transfers.

I always use Al Rostamani, they charge 45dhs for any amount. Done it many times and the money gets there in 2 days max We use them too-have the plastic customer card to speed things up-and they always give better than the advertised rate-have been getting the money back to Australia in a day lately too-pretty impressive for theri charges

UAE Exchange are great because if you take in large sums of money and say "what's the best rate you can give me"...they will have a 'best rate of the day' that they can give. It may only be slightly better than what's posted, but when sending a few thousand dirhams home, it really makes a difference. I've done this a few times and said "what can you do for me....I'm sending quite a bit this time"! :) And money is always in UK & Irish banks the next day! :) We find the same with the exchange we use-I think any exchange will offer you a better rate-especially if you are a regular customer-always ask!

UAE Exchange use Western Union. I agree check the exchange rate, I got less this month with the exchange, compared to last month ( converting into UK Pounds ).

When you are transferring money home there is more to consider than just the service charge. The exchange rate is one of the most important factors. If you have a look around you will see that they are all offering different exchange rates. That four letter bank being one of the worst!! I find that UAE exchange has one of the best, if not THE best. Depending on how much money you send home, this will more than make up for any service charges. edited by sallyk on 10/03/2011

Cash otherwise you have to wait for the cheque to clear before your transfer is done. As far as I am aware they do not have debit card facilities.

I'm new here and haven;t sent money home...for those of you who have, how do you do it? Do you write a cheque, use a debit card or take in a big wad of cash? I need to transfer a biggish amount (it seems big to me anyway). thanks in advance

Ive used UAE Exchange, charge is now 65dhs, used to be 45!!!!! money always gets to my UK account. Ive tried other outlets and they lost my money in the system for 9 days, wasnt till i noticed it hadnt arrived that they did anything. I second this, UAE Exchange are very good, worth the extra 25dhs :)

can anyone find that thread posted by the financial magazine writer who knew nothing about finance? I have searched EVERWHERE and can't find it. It appears to have been deleted (I posted on it and it is not in my history). If the OP of that thread was clever she would have asked EW to get rid of it as it identified her in the link and also showed her to be less than an able professional.

Alice you are going to kick yourself when you realise that even with the transfer charge using a money exchange service would have been much better for you all along than the world most useless bank. I transfer money once a month to Australia using Al Ansari and it is always in my Australian account within 2 days. HTH :)
