Yes you can, the passport information is taken mainly for the countries that you are travelling to and from (As others have said the API). If it is one of the bigger airlines go online and they will something such as a Manage My Booking section, you can update passport details there or at the airport it can be done by the check in agent. <em>edited by Fiat500 on 17/02/2015</em>

No its not on the actual ticket. For the API. I havent received the new passport yet just trying to find out if it is possible to do. I assume as the OP said you can change it online when you have the new number I think they are more concerned if the PP is valid and hasn't expired
