Right, so say I was making sweets for the bake sale at school and labeling the product, I should add a clear warning that it contains coconut, just in case? To be safe I would include all ingredients as there seem to be so many different allergies these days.

I'd label it with all ingredients but those with serious allergies will most likely avoid bake sales anyway... You are a good mum to think this.. thanks ;)

Botanically a coconut is a seed not a nut and is officially classified as a drupe. A drupe is a fruit in which an outer fleshy part surrounds a shell of hardened endocarp with a seed inside. While it is possible to be allergic to coconut just because someone is allergic to ordinary nuts it doesn't mean they are allergic to coconut as there is no cross reaction. It is on a case by case basis although most people highly sensitive to nuts won't risk it.

Well I guess it would be an individual thing (not all nut allergy sufferers are affected by all of the nuts)...however I do have a friend with a total nut allergy and for her, this includes coconut.
