Commute from Dubai to Abu Dhabi- different questions- please help?

Hello ladies.

It is possible that I will accept a job in Abu Dhabi but the main reason I still think about it is the travel.
I will not move there as my DS has just settled in a nursery here and I prefer staying here in Dubai.
I have different questions and hope some of you can help me who have the same problems or a husband who commutes.

How long will it take me from Marina to Abu Dhabi if I leave at 7.15 in the morning to Salam Street (between Banjas Street and Hamdan Street)?
Will it be easy to find a parking there at that time? If not, where can I park?
How much is the parking? Is there a annual parking card? Who much would it be for the year?
Is anyone travelling there every day with a driver?

Thanks very much in advance for your responses.
Really appreciate as I need to make a decission very soon.

Agree with the others re the timing - 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 30 depending on traffic and what time you need to leave / get there. What are your contracted hours? I was having to go there 2/3 days a week working 8-6, and it was a complete killer - absolutely hated it. However, I've just started a new job (admittedly based at AD airport so a bit closer) and because I'm now working 8-4 (8-5 worst case), I'm home before I would have finished work if I had taken the jobs I was offered in Dubai. I dont have cruise control on my car, I drive sensibly and safely, but am now a complete podcast addict (thank you BBC and Stephen Fry!!) and the journey seems to fly by. For me the desicion was financial - I know it's not going to be for ever, and hence I can deal with it.

Thanks very much for all your replies. Regarding the parking , can I not park somewhere outside and walk maybe 10 minutes? Can I pay a parking ticket for the whole day or is it like in Dubai, that I sometimes can only get one for 2 hours and need to check again. Any other opinions? Maybe positive experience.

I did the commute for 6 months, but choose to resign at the end of my probation as the commute wasn't for me. I was working at the Exhibition Centre near the Carrefour, and it used to take me 1hr 30. I know people do manage to do the journey quicker, but I'm not brave enough to drive in the fast lane, and the speed of the cars going passed used to terrify me. In the short time I worked there I saw some horrific accidents. Salem St is alot further in the city that I was working. The parking is a nightmare. Which block is your office in? You should see if the company can offer basement allocated parking as part of the contract. Other things you should consider: - I was spending 2000 aed a month on fuel. I was having to fill up everyday, as in my car a daily trip was just over half a tank. Bare that in mind when you negotiate your contract. - Three hours driving a day is not healthy. The journey home was a killer for me. A dead straight road, in the dark. (and if it was light, guy's perving in my car trying to take photos)!!!! - I was constantly tired and had no time for my husband. From Sunday - Thursday I worked, drove, slept, drove, work. On Thursday night I was so shattered I couldn't bare to socialize. I would sleep in for a bit on Friday to try and get some energy. Then by Saturday I was a witch again as I was depressed it was all starting again the next day - And I don't have Children. I thought I'd give you my honest experience. I do hope I haven't terrified you, but thought you might like some feedback from a lady whose been then. On a positive note - some of my colleagues did the commute, and they seemed to cope. I do think its a personal thing. And definatley not for me.

Really appreciate as I need to make a decission very soon. i would say the marina to ad is at least 1.30 mins. parking can be a nitemare, they are putting in parking meters, which will cost you 15 dhs per day, but you cannot buy a parking card only if you live there. please note that you can only park in the meters ones not the ones for permits, a new rule has come into force that they will tow the car and fine you 500 dhs. you can travel along the main highway at 160 but you will have to slow down once you hit the salam st roadworks....! hamden area is a nitemare, so it depends exactly where you are actually having to go it may take you more than half an hour once off salam st. salam st roadworks are coming along but they will be around for maybe another 9months or more. imho you should move down to ad, the rents are coming down and with reem island coming on line in the next months or so they will still come down. if you have a child in nursery you will be pretty knackered by the time you come back and how would you be able to pick him up etc. yes you can sponsor a driver but then thats more money and i would much rather be in control of my own fact rather than depending on others.

Don't know about that specific area, but parking is a big problem in AD. If there is MAwaqif in that area, it is 2 DHS an hour, 15DHS for 24 hours. A parking permit is provided for residents of the area only, so you will have to pay daily. Mone75, sorry to ask but are you a single mother? If so, I wouldn't think of the commute unless there is someone I can depend on in case of emergencies. Just ignore me if it is covered already, one of my colleagues just had an emergency about her daughter last week so we are still a bit shaken about it..

OH does this journey every day from The Palm to AD, takes approx 1 hr - 1hr10mins, really not as bad as expected

DH says 1hr 30 at that time but if you leave at 6.30am it will take about 1hr 10 mins, if there are no accidents and you set cruise control to 140mph. However there are also major roadworks and diversions ongoing around Salam Street which can increase your journey time and these will last at least another 6 months. Sorry cant help with the rest.
