You could also opt to get your own accommodation, I know many Emirates families that has choosen this option.
There are lots of reasanoble priced communities out there like Remraam, Jumeirah Village Triangle and Jumeirah Village Circle.
Hi everyone
We have been staying in the company accommodation for close to 1.5 years now.we requested to have an accommodation nearby to the school my kids got into. A year plus later, due to the massive traffic jam, they eventually got fed up and tired. Often fell asleep at school despite having early nite every school days.
We tried to appeal for change of accommodation to Dso.. But it took them months to reply. And the reply is always no.we were offered al Furjan villas but that too is too far from school. Rentals in Dso is really crazy. Anyone encounter this problem? Found any solution?. Please share with me. I am at my wits end and my last resort is to bring my kids back home before things got worse.
One solution: opt out and find your own accommodation near your kids' school.

Your welcome Oceanview, I wouldn't worry about looking for schools in Diera unless of course you have primary school kids and look at DESS.
It is a stressful time and we as expats have all been there and survived to tell the tale, my family and I have been here nearly 12 years, Dubai was quite a bit different back then. At least you now have loads of western shops and supermarkets etc and loads of schools to chose from, but lots more traffic!
Emirates hopefully will sort you out soon, however to be honest I don't know of many people that happy with the accommodation side of things, loads of people from my era have been forced out of there homes in Jumeriah and told to live in Meydan and told if you dont like it leave. To be honest, where you live is obviously a huge part of your life and family's ability to settle in well, so don't settle for anything other than what you are willing to accept for your duration in Dubai as Emirates do not allow you to move within company accommodation unless they tell you, you have too. I am not sure if it is the same with your husbands contract but you can opt out of company accommodation and take the allowance, but to be honest that doesn't get you much either and I wouldn't do that until you have been here a couple of years and get to know the area's and the market. Once you opt out, Emirates never allow you back into company accommodation.
Anyway embrace the change, it will be frustrating but at least your husband will be in the country, Pilots wives deal with all the changes and frustrations alone while husband are on trips, or so exhausted from jet lag they are of no use to us anyhow, LOL Once your kids start school, they will settle in, in no time and you will also meet other Mum's etc and before you know it, you will have been here 12 years also.
My one piece of advice, bring your kids school shoes from Australia, hard to find decent ones here that you don't have to mortgage your house to pay for. ;)
There are some empty villas in the Cedre section of DSO that were/are EK villas as I know several pilots who have recently left and the villas have not been re filled yet. The accommodation in DSO is excellent and there are several schools that would be worth looking at within a 20 minute journey. I would not look at schools round the temporary accommodation, look around the vicinity of Meydan/DSO and travel for a while until the formal accommodation is allocated.
Deira and Oud Metha are both good locations with great schools and amenities very close by. There are some lovely apartments in both areas and you are close to parks, malls, the beach, as well as a lot more of the cultural side of Dubai.
Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that everything must be on the "New Dubai" side to be in the acceptable bracket.
:)
yes true , I live in Deira and can never think of living in Jumirah or new dubai ! i love it here actually i tried living in jumirah and new dubai for around 3 weeks and it didnt work for my family
oceanview i think most probably you will be given abraj al mamzar , i heard its the new buildings emirates have leased as staff accommodation.

Good idea to stay positive oceanview. We have just joined EK and we were put in temporary accommodation in Oud Metha, not the best location but it was fine. We were expecting to be in there for a few months but it only ended up being 4 weeks. Things do take time within EK but overall we are happy and I still think it’s a good company.
Thank you siennachick for your reply. Hubby is not a pilot he is in management and yes goal posts have been moved some what. I am not there yet, waiting for children to get into school. I didn't even look at schools around deira so it's a little frustrating. It's enough to move house let alone moving countries (its first time for us) and for the children's sake we were hoping for as normality as possible during the transition - being based in a community with expats, a courtyard and a bit more space than an apartment. Staying and thinking positive :)
Welcome to Dubai! Sorry to hear of your debacle with Emirates Accommodation, it is a total mess at the moment, like it was a few years ago. The problem was the original Meydan villas were deemed unacceptable by higher management when enough complaints were lodged, example, not being able to use upstairs toilets, not being able to flush paper in any toilet and if you did getting an enormous fine. So many problems with the villa's to many to mention here. So alot of families are being moved out of the Meydan villa's to the new villa's being built at Meydan, which have not been completed yet. So therefore there must be a shortage of villa's so your husband has been put into temporary accommodation until a suitable villa becomes available.
The accommodation department are not very understanding or good to deal with, it takes the squeaky wheel to be oiled if you get my drift. Unfortunately for you and your husband as a new joiner you will be way down the list of getting a villa, however you will need to inform accommodation that Diera is not acceptable for a family and you want a more suitable apartment until a villa becomes available.
Silicon (semmer villa) are the most desirable in the company now, as they are the biggest and only free standing villas, they now are usually put aside for management. (crazy but welcome to Emirates)
To be honest I am surprised if your husband reads pprune you actually accepted a job as a Pilot with Emirates plenty of information on there as to how bad the accommodation situation is and loads more.
Before any of the non Emirates people jump down our throats and tell us how lucky we are blah blah blah, it is part of our salary package to be supplied with suitable accommodation and one of the reasons we accept the job and when the goal posts get moved after you sign the contract it is not acceptable.
Hope you get it sorted, however a friend of mine was in "temporary accommodation" for 18 months in a furnished 2 bed hotel room....with 3 kids and had to pay for there furniture to be stored. Hello tomorrow......LOL
Hoping someone has some advice... When interviewed husband was taken on tour of accom provided byEK - a villa in meydan. He was offered the job that day and advised he'd relay info back to family and get back to them. On returning home HR later contacted him to advise meydan was not an option and they couldn't say where our accom would be. We were unsure to commit and then EK offered for me to go there. we were taken to DSO. We were happy with that. He has now arrived in dxb for his new job to be told we will be placed in an apartment in deira. Anyone else have these stories to share?? I have been told by other expats there are families leaving DSO with villas available for EKstaff. TIA
